Changing Name

To change your name after the wedding, the first step is getting a new social security card, right? Now to do that, do you just bring the marriage license that the officiant filled out and signed at the wedding, or do you need to get a certified copy? I've heard different versions, not sure what works!

I would have both, just in case.  They only wanted our certificate, but I have also heard of places wanting the certified copy.  I think it just dependson where you go and who is working with you.

I just had the original signed copy with me at the social security office, and the mva.  No one ever asked for a certified copy.  But, you do have to wait 24-48 hours between going to social security and the mva - the systems need to update.  I tried to go right after the other and I had to wait over the weekend...no big deal.

OK, I have a really stupid question now.

Does your officiant fill out two official certificates? One that gets filed with the county where you got married and one that goes to you, the bride & groom?
