2 questions - tuxes and hotel room blocks

Hi Girls,

First of all thanks to all of you for the advice you have been giving me.  Here goes my questions...

1.  How far ahead of time do you need to reserve the tuxes if you are renting?
2.  When did you contact hotels about blocking rooms (how far ahead of the wedding?) and how do most hotels do it, meaning do they block a portion at the special price and then release them if they aren't reserved?

Thanks in advance,
Stacy

We probably booked our tuxes about a month and a half away.  I'm not sure what the rental places policy is though.  We did it so I could check off my list because it was one of the easier things to tackle.

I initially started contacting hotels in June for our March wedding but that was because SXSW falls on the same weekend as our wedding.  When I started out I contacted the hotels I was interested in individually, but that turned out to be such a mess, so I searched on the knot and someone else recommended using www.hotelplanner.com. It was the best thing ever. You put in your criteria and multiple hotels send you back offers that you can accept if you like them.

Just be aware that some hotels require a minimum of the rooms they block for you to be booked or you end up covering some of the rooms yourself.  I was lucky enough to find enough options where the hotel didn't require this, just be careful to read the fine print before you sign anything and ask about this specifically if they don't cover it.  I even hand wrote it at the bottom at one of our contracts before I would sign it and had the hotel rep sign it too. You don't want to be stuck paying for 5 rooms that don't get booked!
