Door bell just rang...

and it was the mail man who dropped off our FIRST wedding gift! I'm going to wait to open it until my shower next month, but holy cow! I'm so excited!

  • No way would I be able to wait! I think you should open now to make sure nothing is damaged and get a TY note out. But that's just me justifying opening it. We got our first RSVP card in the mail today and I couldn't even wait to get back upstairs to the apartment to open it.

Yeah...I'd have to open it too!

I also agree with Snuff that etiquette wise, you should get a Thank You note out.

  • I would not wait to open it, The sender might think it got lost in the mail if they do not hear from you on it. I know I would be worried if a month went by and someone did not acknowledge a gift I sent.
  • Congrats on the first gift! I agree with PP about opening the gift and sending out a thank you note. It also serves as a way to make sure the gift didn't get damaged on its way. We had a platter that arrived in pieces and had to request a new one. Some store policies request you reply within two weeks if something is damaged or broken. Just another thing to think about!

  • I agree, you really should open it and send the sender a TY note.

Some stores have policies about the length of time you have to notify them that an item arrived damaged.

  • Yeah...I've had a number of boxes come from Macys.com with things that were broken.  I returned those to the store right away and had no problem.  We had a wine glass arrive totally shattered and 3 out of 4 boxes of dishes that someone sent us had broken pieces inside!  I love Macy's, but they have to figure out a better way to ship things!

  • I would definitely open it, and send a TY note! I don't think I'd be able to walk past a present and not open it anyway Innocent

  • I've already talked to the individual that sent it and verbally told them thank you. She informed me that it is a bridal shower gift (purchased off our registry from Target). She would prefer I wait to open it with the other gifts at the bridal shower. Smile
