Why we need to get to Confession this week (in very brief)...

. . . because of 1 Corinthians 11:27:

"Whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner eats and drinks damnation against himself."

Yikes.  (Always my reaction when I think about that verse.)  :-X  Granted, we should confess every week . . . but it's Holy Week, and IMHO, that's the perfect time to get back into the swing of things.

Most parishes offer Reconciliation opportunities more frequently this week - I've got to get there today (thankfully, the church is open until 9 PM tonight!)

Ugh I feel so bad. Last time I confessed was in HS in our weekly masses. I dont want to make excuses, because none are good enough to avoid confession, but someone serously needs to put me in the car and take me there. Im bad :(

    Jasmin, why every week?

I go to Reconciliation when I have a serious sin to confess.  Otherwise, it's about once a month.

I do make a special effort for both Christmas and Easter but other than that, it's if necessary or once a month

well, confession is a sacrament.  why not receive it as often as possible?

i was raised that you never took communion without confession first.  however, it was also easier then becuase we attended the latin mass only, and confesson was always offered before mass.

now, i dont go as much because it means two trips to church since confession is offered every saturday night and we go to mass sunday morning.   the two trips normally wouldnt be a big deal if we went local, but our church is 1/2 hour away.  i do wish parishes would encourage confession all year long like they do during lent.

i never take communion with mortal sin on my soul.  ever.  venial sins, yes, but i always review my sins wiht myself and say a good act of contrition prior to receiving.

Yes, go! God is there waiting with His Infinite Mercy.

I have heard varying advice on how often is the right amount to go...I'm sure to some degree it depends. I believe most Popes have gone weekly, so that's certainly a good example to follow. I have heard once a month from various local church figures. And once a year/for mortal sin is the minimum. But I've heard it described with an analogy of going to the gym. If you never go, you'll hate to go and dread it, and it will be harder to work out, and you won't make much progress toward fitness. If you go regularly, you won't mind so much, it will get easier, and you will make progress.

Calypso, your last paragraph reminded me of the Baltimore Catechism drawings (which I think you said you were taught from)--Healthy people eat food (state of grace=Communion) Sick people eat food (venial sin=Communion) Dead people don't eat food (mortal sin=no Communion.) Always so to-the-point!

i really love the Baltimore Catechism.  i dont think they use it any  longer in religious ed, but it really was a simple and thorough resource.  i will teach my kids with it.

Thank for the reminder!  I'm pretty sure my bridezilla freakouts over the past week necessitate some penance before Easter :)

    That's my point.

If I haven't committed a mortal sin, I can go to communion without confession.  That's the rule and I abide by that.

It's not difficult for me to get to mass, the church I like and know best is only 5 blocks away.  There are two others closer but the acoustics are poor in both.

oot, I should have stated more clearly that I was connecting Mass - and reception of the Eucharist - with Confession, so that we never receive Him while unconfessed.  But yes, I understand exactly what you're saying - if you are not bearing the weight of sin, you're good to go.  :-)
