Hindu-American Wedding

My FH is Hindu (from India) and I'm a self-proclaimed hybrid (my father is Jewish and my mother is Catholic and we were raised exposed to both but not really either) and we are having a friend marry us but I would like to include some of his traditions in our wedding (even though we will be heading to India in 2012 to get married there also).  Any ideas of what I could do to include some of his traditions in our true American wedding?

Re: Hindu-American Wedding

  • Congratulations on your engagement!

I am Indian (although I was born and raised here in the US) and my FI is American. We're having a traditional Hindu ceremony, but there are a few things you could incorporate into your wedding:

    - garland exchange when the bride arrives to the alter
    - you could have the traditional mehndi/henna done on your hands for a little bit of an Indian flair
    - You could incorporate the "mangal fera" into your ceremony. Here is the meaning behing it:

Mangal Fera – Circling the Fire
The couple circles the fire four times. During the first
three rounds, the bride follows the groom and on the
last round the groom follows the bride. With each
round, they seek the four goals of life:
    • Dharma – Sense to lead a righteous life
    • Artha – Prosperity
    • Kama – Energy and passion in life
    • Moksha – Attainment of completeness

Just a few thoughts. I am sure there are other things you could incorporate, maybe speak to your future in-laws to see what traditions they may want to incorporate.

    Hope that helps!
