Fun wedding activities at reception!

Hi, I'm having an offbeat morning wedding on a Thursday.

I want there to be a very organic, family reunion type feel and am looking for different types of activies to have as the main source of entertainment. For a morning wedding, I'm not digging the idea of it being all about dancing.

So is there anything else that comes to mind?

Our ceremony and reception is at a nature center. Ceremony in a wooded area, a big beautiful room with tall ceilings for the reception, and a large patio space available.

  • What about corn hole or some other outdoor sport?  Nothing where people would be running around working up a sweat, but something that would be a good group activity.  I'm thinking corn hole, croquet, or some other activity.

Might not be acceptable at a nature perseve but really good suggestions.

I probably wouldn't have activities. As a guest a probably wouldn't participate and would be more inclinded to stand around chatting especially if it was in the morning.
  • My Fiance really wants to have a roast of the bride and groom. I'm not sure how it would fit into our wedding, but I do like the idea. Friends and familiy members going to an open mic to tell funny/embarrassing stories sounds like a good laugh to me!

Of course I would be mindful of the audience and type of people you are inviting... some stories could be a little more embarassing than you would like shared in that setting!

    Good luck!

toothpastechica: love your idea; my fiancee and I are doing the same!! :)

We are doing lawn games too. not sure if it would be a problem for your wedding as long it was in a grassy area not trampling flowers or something in the nature preserve, or you could do them in the patio area. Nothing says family reunion like fun lawn games.

another thing we are doing is a trivia game (like pub quiz) at the reception a little after the meal. Winning table gets a prize.  Not sure if this fits your theme, but sounds fun to me!

    Happy planning
  • I think it would be fun to have a scavenger hunt.  It would be a great way to occupy guests while taking photos.  Plus almost everyone can do it.

  • If you go the lawn game route, check out Kubb. It's a "viking game" and it's so much fun! We got it from my family in Denmark, and now my whole family plays it, and now FI's family loves it too! It's great fun and a bunch of people can play at a time (up to 12, or maybe more!)
Otherwise, just board games might be cool. But I also agree with PP that people may be more inclined to just talk and visit, rather than have activities.
    Good luck! :)
