Maggie Sottero/Sottero & Midgley Sizing

Hi ladies! So I have a dress sizing dilemma and I thought I'd ask for opinions/experiences. I ordered a Sottero and Midgley dress and my measurements were 31.5, 27, 37, which is between a 6 and an 8 (closer to the 6 but not quite). The Maggie size chart says that a 6 is 34.5, 26.5, 37. An 8 says it is 36, 28, 38.5. They're all going to be large in the bust and that will have to be altered, no way around that one! haha. But should I go with the 6 and be pretty close but the waist could be a 1/2 inch small. Or should I go up to the 8 and have it be too big all around and just alter it all. I would like to save money on alterations if I could Smile

I was also wondering for any of you ladies who have ordered a Maggie or a Sottero and Midgley how you felt the sizes ran? Close to the sizing chart/recommended sizes or were they off? I've heard that the sizing chart is off and that I should be fine with the 6 but I'd hate to be wrong and have it be too small. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!!

Well, just from the measurements you gave it sounds like you are smaller than me. I didn't pay attention to size charts or anything, but I got the S&M Adorae in a size 6 and it fits very well. I don't think I can sit in it, but I knew that from the start! lol If it laces up the back then at least they can tie it tighter/looser as needed (they just always tie it so I can't breathe). Obviously your best bet is to try both sizes and see which you feel more comfortable in. Even if it's not the exact dress, other dresses by the designer with the same silhouette

Also just a tip to possibly save on alteration costs- I am wearing flats, so in the regular dress I would have had to have it taken up. Instead, the lady ordered it in a petite, which meant it automatically came I believe 3 inches shorter, which means no alterations!

For the bust they are putting cups in it for me ($20) so I don't have to wear a bra, since I don't really need one (ha) but this way it is still filled out some!!

Your wedding is also quite far out..so just keep that in mind if you order it now, that you will need to maintain the same size for over a year to fit in it! Tongue out
    Good luck!

I'm no help w/ the sizing, but if you are in or near Syracuse, use Mary Golden.

She took my dress in (which b/c of the beading was really complicated), added bra cups and did the bustle for $50.  She was wonderful!!!!!

Melissa, where were you from? I forgot, sorry. Monica and I had the same seamstress and she is AMAZING! Highly highly recommended. Shes been doing this for 30+ years and runs her business out of her home in Liverpool. She charged me $50 to have my 9 layer dress shortened.

Let me know if you want her number.

As far as it possibly being 1/2 inch tight. That would make me nervous. But as my wedding got closer I ate to chill my nerves, so banking on losing weight wasnt something I was willing to risk. Just me.

Yep.  Never ever waste your money at the bridal salon/dress shop.  They will tell you that you should never trust anyone else and blah blah blah... then they rape you on the price.  Mary was fabulous and cost next to nothing.

Haha love that a whole conversation took place while I was writing and ended up saying the same thing as Monica.

I just had my first fitting in my Maggie Sottero (Karena) yesterday!  Post coming soon.  I was actually 3 different sizes when measured -- a 2 in the bust, a 6 in the waist, and an 8 in the hips.  I ordered the 6 and it fits really well!  (It's a lace-up so I do have some flexibility.)  I'm also getting cups put in and because of that little extra padding, they don't need to alter the bust.

I ordered the 3" petite as well (I think they also have a 5" petite one) and the length is perfect -- no hemming for me!

ETA: Never really answered your question: I'd get the 6 if I were you -- the 8 sounds like it would be too big.

Thanks for the help ladies! I really appreciate it! I'll definitely be doing the petite length... good idea! Then I won't be tripping over it like  I was with every dress I tried on haha.

And Monica and Bridgett thanks for the seamstress rec! I'll definitely keep that in mind closer to the wedding when I'll need alterations to the bust line, bustle, etc. :) Her prices sound unbelievable and I'm glad to know that she does great work. I grew up in L'pool and my parents live there so that'll work out awesome :) If either of you could give me her number I'd really appreciate it. Then hopefully I'll write it down somewhere where I won't lose it (ha). Tongue out

And Danielle, I definitely get what you're saying about ordering it now. It is early but I won my wedding dress (for free! yay) and the order has to be in by August 1. But I've been the same size forever so hopefully it'll be fine Laughing But yeah it is definitely a bit early! haha

Holy freaking cow!  My alterations are going to be over $300!  WTF?  I was nervous to just pick up the dress and take it home because I bought it out in Albany.  I was afraid I'd get it here and have nowhere to take it.  Geeeez, I wonder what they would say if I told them I didn't want it altered anymore.  It's so freakin expensive that I'd probably still pay less to have it altered here and pay them for the pinning....
