Cupcakes!

One of the first things fiance and I decided on was that we wanted cupcakes instead of a cake at our wedding (perhaps with a small cake for cutting on top). Has anyone done this/looked into it? I was hoping it would save money (seeing as cakes usually cost you a couple of dollars per slice).

And in case you are wondering what flavors we want, I want red velvet and he wants funfetti! My mouth is drooling already Tongue out

I've seen cupcakes done quite a bit.  I know my baker does them.  I'm pretty sure most will, since it's become a popular alternative.   Not sure where you're located, but we used Kelly's Sweet Rewards out of Brookfield.  She's absolutely amazing and makes yummy and beautiful cakes and cupcakes.  DH LOVES her red velvet cupcakes... her red velvet cake balls are amazing too.  We had her do cupcakes for our rehearsal dinner... red velvets w/ cream cheese icing, and vanilla w/ chocolate buttercream.  soooo good.  Her chocolate buttercream is the best I've ever had anywhere, and I'm a totally cupcake freak!

She actually has a link on her website for her cupcake towers so you can see some examples of weddings and events she's done.  Her website seems to be a bit wonky right now, but you can get the idea from it at least.

We are doing cupcakes with a small cake on top for us to cut.. we are saving quite a bit of money. We are spending about $250.. vs. the 500 or so I was quoted for my cake and this includes the set up and delivery etc. We are getting a pumpkin cupcake with a vanilla frosting, a  chocolate chambord with a raspberry filling and raspberry frosting and a funfetti cupcake with funfetti frosting as well.. were using cakes unlimited in Torrington and Lisa is amazing to work with. Check out her facebook page she has tons of examples of her cupcake towers.. we tasted her red velvet and it was in the running..lol.. but I had to have the chambord and raspberry lol! good luck!

Ooh, good to know they are cheaper! How many cupcakes are you getting for that amount?

We are still over a year away, but our potential venue is going to be over what we ideally wanted to spend. Trying to show the fiance we can chop costs in other areas! Thanks for all your recommendations :D You ladies are the best!

we use A little something bakery in west hartford for our wedding cupcakes. We got the red velvet (SOO tasty) and i think it ended up costing around $2.50 per cupcake, but it was still cheaper than cake.

We are getting 100 cupcakes for that.. It depends on what you want though some are 2.25 a cupcake but the chocolate chambord with raspberry filling and rapberry frosting is 2.50 a cupcake because it has a filling so its .25 more.. they are definately worth it thought mmmnn so yummy! :)

I dont think I would use Truffles for a big event like a wedding.  I have had their cakes and cookies before and they were good.  But when my mom ordered a cake for my bridal shower it was frozen in the middle when we got it.  So much so that they had trouble cutting the cake and the middle of it was tasteless because it was so frozen.  I was embarassed at my bridal shower, but imagine how awful that would be at your wedding??  Plus when we called them about it the next day they were really rude on the phone saying it wasnt there fault, and that the cake boss freezes his cakes so its ok.  And this is not the first time I have heard of this happening there.  So if you want to swing by and pick up a coffee cake or cookies I would recommend it, there stuff is good.  But I would not chance it and order a cake for a big event.  Why take a chance when there are so many bakeries out  there that have a much better track record.
