Anyone have Invisalign?

I just started it and I'm kind of freaking out that I didn't think this through well enough. My wedding is in less than 6 months. I know that I can take them out for the day of the wedding, but I'm worried that my teeth will shift or have spaces between them in the straightening process. Anyone have experience??

Re: Anyone have Invisalign?

  • I just finished my 6-month invisalign treatment.  There were plenty of times that I left my trays out for a full day and then just put them in at night to sleep.  I didn't visably notice any difference in my teeth but I will tell you that the longer you leave them out (especially early in the process) the more they will hurt when you put them back in.  In my experience, it hurt putting them in after a long day of not wearing them but the pain went away pretty quickly and then I didn't feel anything.

How long will your treatment last?  Like I said, mine was only 6 months (finished a few weeks ago) but you still have to wear the retainers.  My dentist gave me the choice between an old-school retainer (touches the top of your mouth with the metal that you only wear when you sleep), a permanent retainer (a metal bar bonded behind teeth on top and bottom) and invisalign tray retainers (basically your final trays as retainers).  I chose the tray retainers.  I will have to wear them "as much as I can" for 3 months, then only at night (every night) for 9 months and then twice a week over night for the next few years.

Regardless of what you choose or how far along in the process you will be, you will definitely be able to take them out (and keep them out all day) for your wedding.  I would talk to your dentist about it but I would suggest at least wearing them for a bit in the morning of your wedding then putting them back in to sleep to avoid a lot of discomfort.

    Hope this helps!

  • I actually just officially finished my Invisalign today!  Mine was actually a 14 month stint because I had some serious issues.  It takes a few weeks for your teeth to kind of get used to the fact that you're shifting them, so in the beginning of the process, you'll feel a difference if you leave them out for a couple hours.  After getting going and really getting into it, I could leave it out for a full day if I needed to.  Putting them back in was uncomfortable, but still relatively easy.

I had a friend get married over the summer, 5 months after I had started.  I kept them in as much as I could the day of, but took them out shortly before lunch and didn't put them back in until I was back in the hotel room at the end of the night.  There wasn't any visible shifting (except for one of my bottom teeth, but that thing was STUBBORN; you couldn't see it when I smiled so it wasn't a big deal).  I'd discuss it with your orthodontis just because we don't know how much movement they're trying to do with your teeth, but you should have no problem leaving it out for a day.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies!! I appreciate all the info you shared. I'm doing a long term treatment (over a year and a half) so I'm in it for the long haul.

Trust me, as annoying as it can be at times, the results really are quite amazing.  I had trouble at about the mid point sticking to keeping them in all day, but if you can make yourself do it, I promise it'll be worth it.

They had originally told me I'd be 14 to 16 months, and the only reason it even took 14 months for me is because of scheduling issues for my various visits.  I probably added about a month because of a couple 1 week delays in when I could get in there due to my work schedule.  I had an initial round of aligners, 20 of them I wore on 2 week intervals.  At the end of that, I still had a couple stubborn teeth that didn't go quite where we wanted them to, so they did another set of impressions and did what they called a "refinement" stage.  That was another 13 trays, but they were only 1 week intervals.

My mom had invisalign at my wedding.  Her dentist told her she could remove them for the day and not worry about it.  She wore them until pictures started while we were getting ready and then didn't put them on again until she got home that night.  Her teeth were fine.  She was about 6 months or so into her set.  She did the long haul and she's now done and just has a retainer she wears at night.  They made a huge difference and she was really happy with them.

Just curious... around how much does Invisalign cost?  And how often do you have to go back for tray changes?  I've wanted to do this for a while now, but I've been having trouble getting answers.  Seems as though I can't get pricing without a consultation.

  • They seem to cost about as much as regular braces (which can be a couple thousand dollars).  I think you go in for tray changes about every two weeks.

It depends on a ton of factors, which is why you can't get pricing without a consultation.  I had some gapping in the top and some crowding in the bottom, and my arches were too small because of a poor job done with braces when I was much younger, so that's why I had a longer stint.  Mine was quotes at being 14 - 16 months, and it was $5800.  Most orthos will accept FSA payments, so that's what I did (if you don't know what that is, it means you get to pay for it pre-tax).

The original series I changed trays every 2 weeks, and they gave me 4 tray sets at a time, so I was back in the office for a quick check and to pick up new trays once every 2 months.  The second series they gave me 4-5 at a time, but I only wore them each for a week so I was back in every month.
