cake and flowers

My wedding is about a year away (8/18/12) and I have most of the major stuff booked with depoits down. The next thing I need to work on is booking vendors for our wedding cake and flowers. Any one have any suggestions on when is a good time to do this? Will vendors allow me to book a year in advance?

Also, anyone have experience with Michael's Florist or Flowers by Johnny (both in Kenmore)? They are both very close to our house and church so it would be convenient. Thanks! :)

    whoa, date twin!

check out some of the upcoming bridal shows. some of the vendors offer cheaper prices and other 'specials' for booking at a show.

our florist and bakery both took us about 1.5 years ahead of time...though we dont have to make the actual design decisions yet, they at least saved 8/18 for us. =)

ceremony is at a church on main street by campus, and then reception at salvatores.
we chose muscoreils for our cake (though i'm so nervous since it will have to travel pretty much clear cross town! haha). ive heard good things about dessert deli and butterwood too.  if you go to the bridal shows, you can sample some of the cakes =)
our florist is maureens' wholesale in downtown buffalo. flowers arent really important to me, and she seemed nice at one of the bridal shows. i like that you found a few close to your house and church.

of course if you want to go with the same vendors I did.... it might be tough since we're looking for the same date and I already have them booked. haha  i'm not sure how many weddings they're set up to do in 1 day. but at least they're not the only places in town =)  i think you'd be pretty safe if you decided on and reserved your vendors by the end of September. good luck!

I am also getting married at Pearl Street Grill! :)

    As far as venders go....

You mentioned Flowers by Johnny, which is where I'm getting my flowers (I live right near there as well) and I had a meeting with Maureen's Wholesale and IMO it just was not satisfactory customer service, which caused me to look elsewhere.  I found Flowers by Johnny to be very professional and EXTREMELY helpful, detail-oriented, and budget-conscious (esp if you are not going all out with flowers and let him know you have a tight budget- which was me).  He is more contemporary (as you've seen his window displays I assume), and I really liked his ideas.  He pulled flowers out from the back of all sorts, put them together, really got what I was trying to do, and I will let you know in a month how they turned out if you'd like.  (I don't know a lot about Michael's florist, but I do know that he is very busy, but he is more traditional).

As far as the cake- I've heard wonderful things about Muscoreils, as they are prob one of the busiest wedding cake bakeries in the area.  However, I did not know about them and had a very strict budget for everything so I went with Carriage Trade Bakery on Elmwood and Great Arrow (btw Hertel and Amherst St.).  I love their pastries and they're a small family-owned business and I really enjoyed our cake-tasting from there.  I think they are more affordable than the really popular bakeries, so I'd definitely check them out and see if you like what they offer :)

We used Zilly Cakes and our cake was so delicious.  Our flowers were done by our friend Brad, who at the time flew in from Hawaii but has just moved back to NY.  He does amazing work, so email him at aloha.vieques@gmail.com if you are interested.  I can't recomend both Brad and Zilly enough.

If it helps, we booked our florist in January for our October wedding.  Cake was included with our reception.

I used Lipinoga Florist in Clarence for my flowers and was just in love with everything.  They were truly amazing to work with and the flowers were beyond words.
I used Muscoreil's for the Cake and it was delicious and gorgeous and justg to die for.
You can totally book now because I did both like a year ahead of time and it was no problem, I also know they are a little more popular than some bakeries and shops so booking early is a good idea just to make sure you really do get who you want.  As long as you know what you're looking for I would say look now.

I'm using Bloom Florist on Main St. downtown for my flowers. He's AMAZING. And is so detail oriented. I cannot recommend him enough! And I know he'll book you in advance maily because my FI and I have had 2 other wedding dates we had to move around and he was so accomidating!

On a whim after a stressful first attempt for a cake at a place I will not mention, we went to Wolter's Bakery, it's in the Georgetown Plaza on Sheridan Drive in Williamsville/Amherst. They are reasonably priced and their cake is so yummy! They've been around for many years too. My granpa used to get their italian cookies from them when I was a little girl.

I've heard good things about Dessert Deli's cupcakes (and I've had them too) but I know their cake is super expensive depending on what you want (what cake isn't tho!) Sometimes it can be hit or miss with them.
