NWR: Furniture Stores?

H and I spent most of today looking for a couch for our new place. Right now we are on a tiny Ikea loveseat and MUST upgrade. We went to Rooms to Go, Ashleys, Havertys, Weirs and (ok I admit it) Ikea. We found some stuff we like, but we didn't commit. Any other suggestions?

Re: NWR: Furniture Stores?

  • We were recently couch shopping as well. We will buy a LaZBoy sofa when budget allows. Quality and customer satisfaction appeared to be the best there. We have bought furniture from Rooms to Go and I would not ever purchase from them again.

EEEK that's where our favorite one was from. What happened???
At this point, we are looking more for affordability than quality. The couch we have is SO small (<a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10138530/" rel="nofollow">clicky</a>) and it's ALL we have in terms of furniture. Our place is so tiny right now, that's all that fits.
There's a chance we will move to Los Angeles next summer, so we decided to wait until we were settled and we purchase a home to buy some quality furniture. For that same reason we are using both of our childhood bedroom sets in our new home. We just need a normal-person couch right now.
  • We bought our living room set from JC Penney about 10 months ago (when we bought our house) for only $1000!

We had planned to visit the whole list of furniture stores you mentioned, but we were at Sears in the mall to check out appliances so we decided to browse the department stores. We really liked a sofa at Macy's too but when we saw this deal at JCP, we couldn't pass it up.

The couch, loveseat, and oversized chair were on sale for $700 total. We added the ottoman for $300 more. They don't appear to have the set we bought anymore, but here's the image of it that I had saved so you have an idea.
  • My couches all came from Rooms to Go, and aside from now regretting buying couches that are so huge (but only sort of regretting), I love them.

Weir's was going to be my other suggestion.

My issue with RTG is that the furniture we bought didn't last more than about 2 months.  None of them have worn well at all, and to me, it was not in any way worth the money we paid (even though it was less expensive).  My mom also made a purchase at the same time I did and she has also been extremely dissatisfied with the quality.  RTG offered no help to us when we showed them what happened on these particular pieces of furniture, either. If your primary goal is affordability and you don't want it to last, I think RTG is fine.  Otherwise, I agree on JCP, Weirs, and I'd still go IKEA over RTG.  I'd just pick the cheapest couch ou found and roll with it.

I read a LOT of reviews on Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn sofas online and it was probably 50/50 as to whether they were good quality or poor quality.  I really loved a Crate and Barrel sofa, too. :(

  • We bought our couch over a year ago from RTG.
My only regret is getting a dark brown couch, because EVERYTHING shows up. But with the Cindy Crawford collection there is not much of a neutral color, if I remember correctly.

We also bought our bedroom set and coffee table from RTG we've been pretty satisfied with everything except their delivery.

Have you checked the Ashley's outlet?
That's where we got our dining room table for about $200.

  • We are saving up for a couch from LoveSac.. its pricey but we are obsessed with it!

  • Weir's is my favorite place, and where we've got most of our furniture, but I also like Stacy's Furniture Grapevine and Allen a lot. I also have a couch from Pottery Barn that is over 10 years old that is still in great shape that I love. But probably not what you're looking for right now!
  • We just bought an L-shaped leather couch @ Weirs for about $700 in the clearance section & I absolutley love it!! They always have great clearance prices upstairs!
  • We went to Weirs outlet in Farmers Branch and couldn't find anything we loved (although there were some that were close). Is there another outlet?
