Retro and Vintage Weddings

Hello

I've posted on some of the other boards, but thought I'd introduce myself over here. My name is Stacy and I'm from Northern California. My fiance and I will be getting married November 11, 2011 on our 4 year anniversary. We are leaning towards a 1920s/30s themed wedding. He plans on wearing a fedora and the dress I think I'm going to get is styled after that time era. Anyone else here planning on a '20s/'30s theme? I would love to share ideas. We haven't decided on any color theme yet, but I know that ivory is going to be one of them. Anyway, just thought I'd introduce myself since I haven't really posted on this board yet! :)

Welcome!  So what sort of 20s or 30s dresses are you considering?  There are so many gorgeous vintage and vintage inspired dresses to choose from.

This is the dress I think I will be getting. There were a couple other dresses on  that website that I liked as well, but after asking some family members opinions, everyone agreed that particular dress was the favorite. :)

Do you know of any other websites that have vintage 1920s style dresses? I've come across a few, but usually they look too "costumy" for my taste.

  • Also an 11/11/11 bride and also going with the vintage theme. Our colors are black and champagne. My dress is lace and our whole decor is lace and pearls. We are going with modern vintage, if that makes any sense.

  • I was thinking of either using black and ivory as the colors, or  black ivory and pink. Still not sure yet. I like the lace and pearls decor! I'm sure it's going to be beautiful! :)

  • Love that dress! You did a great job finding one true to the period. I really like your colors of black, ivory, and pink. Very Chanel, very classic. If you need any 1920s music, there is a great CD called Nippers Greatest Hits that has all 20s songs-- I use it it my history class whenever possible =)

That dress is beautiful!  I know exactly what you mean about the costumy aspect.  When people think of the twenties, it's unfortunate that they tend to only think about the flappers and guys wearing gangster zoot suits.  Similarly with the 1930s and "old hollywood".     There's nothing wrong with wanting to dress like a flapper or like a slinky old hollywood actress, but it's important to realise that most people in that era didn't dress like that.  The other beautiful brides are often forgotten about.  The other problem is because these styles (like the heavily beaded flapper dress) are the most popular, it's easier and easier to find cheaper looking gowns out there, that lose the quality.  Glass beeds and chiffon are replaced with plastic and polyester.  :(

I would stalk the website <a href="http://www.poshgirlvintage.com/1920s-beige-lace-sheer-dress-p-1061.html" target="_blank">www.poshgirlvintage.com</a>  Their dresses sell out quickly, but they are all gorgeous and authentic.

    Same with <a href="http://www.dorotheasclosetvintage.com/20sCOTTONlawnTEADressLaceLK.html" target="_blank">www.dorotheasclosetvintage.com</a>

If you're looking for something more higher end, check out designers like Claire Pettibone.   If you fall in love with one, but it's a bit out of your price range, sometimes you can find her dresses on sites like <a href="http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/dresses/11637/Claire-Pettibone-Kristene-Size-4.html" target="_blank">www.preownedweddingdresses.com</a>.
