Are Carnations Tacky?

I am on a budget and plan on mixing carnations and roses in my bridesmaids bouquets.  Will this come off as tacky?

I agree with pp.  They are usually seen as a cheap flower as are baby's breath but when done correctly they can be beautiful.

They do kind of remind me of prom...but I think they can make a great filler flower to add size without adding a lot of cost (compared to other flowers).

No, they're not tacky at all.  I think some people think that because they've been the standard, always available, cheap flower for corsages, funeral, or all purpose occasions.

If you need cheap, but want a more "elegant" look, you might try alstromerias (Peruvian lilies).  They are inexpensive, easy to find, and come in lots of colors.  They look nice with roses.

Carnations are one of my favorite flowers, since they seem to last FOREVER.  I don't think they're tacky, as long as they look nice and are done well.

I love carnations. I considered bouquets of only carnations (no filler or baby's breath) for my bridesmaids. You can make full, very pretty bouquets in so many colors without huge cost. Not tacky at all.

I am a floral designer and i have had to educate my customers many times on why carnations are not as "evil" as people think!   When a designer knows how to use the flower the way it  is most beneficial to the design, it will work beautifully and the fact that it is a carnation won't even be an issue!!  There isn't a better flower to add depth and dimension to certain arrangements because of the many colors they are available in, and sizes. Looking past the traditional red and pink...the color selection is unbelievable, really. and a pure white carnation is really very lovely when used artistically. Don't forget mini carnations as well- what a lovely array of colors they are available in.... long lasting , sturdy and really very pretty. Sometimes people ask me what they are, they think they are little orchids. Go for it, just leave the Baby's  breath out of the picture.... that is a design killer!

My florist suggested mini carnations in the BM bouquets and I cringed because I hate them.  However, he showed me that when bunched together they look like larger more elegant flowers.  It is all about how they are used.
