Sigh of relief.....

I can legally marry FH on our wedding day! I was concerned that we wouldn't be able to get a marriage license because his parents had misplaced his birth certificate. (enter stressful vent about unorganized and procrastinator FILs here).

FH's dad said he gave the birth certificate to him, but FH doesn't recall it and we searched through all of his things to no avail. I know that FILs have moved a couple times in the past few years, but really...losing your son's birth certificate. The *best part* was that when a week ago I mentioned to FMIL that we need it soon, she didn't sound the least bit phased and said "oh you can always order one."

That's when I freaked out, because FH was born in Delaware, but we live in Wisconsin, so I had no idea what the turn around time for ordering a birth certificate would be. FH ordered it online this past Monday and had to pay extra for expediting the delivery. Amazingly, it was delivered today. I was shocked, especially with the 4th of July in the middle of the week. Props to the state of Delaware and UPS. But $56 down the drain...

We gathered all our legal documents a few months back, tracked down birth certificates, ss cards, his divorce decree, etc. (Couldn't find my birth certificate, either, but my parents are still in the same house!)  Went down to the courthouse to verify we had everything.  Turns out, we only need our driver's licenses and cash to pay with.  Odd that expectations vary so much from state to state.
Glad it worked out smoothly for you!
  • Thanks for posting this!  I wasn't even really worried about what we'd need for the license, I just knew it was only valid within 30 days so I wasn't worrying about it yet!  I better look into the requirements...

  • We didn't have to show anything when we got our license. We brought birth certificates, driver's licenses, SS cards, and I even grabbed my passport just in case. Turns out they don't actually verify that stuff in Minnesota. The only thing would be if either of us were divorced they'd need the divorce document/s but that didn't apply to us.
  • In NH I just needed my divorse decree with a seal. And our drivers license

  • I'm surprised that the requirements vary so much. In Milwaukee County we need our IDs, birth certificates, social security cards and proof residency. Quite a bit of requirements, from the sounds of it.

  • We gathered all of our things too and glad we did because they wanted our DL's, BC's, SS cards, divorce papers with seals, and the names and birthdates of any children under the age of 18.  But the nice surprise was that I was told that it took 2 weeks to get the license and then we had to wait 2 weeks to use it.  So Friday I grabbed FI and went down to the courthouse and to our surprise they gave us everything that we needed right then and there and told us that we could go get married right now if we wanted too.  Like PP said it's surprising how different each state is and each county in that state.
