Hello - intro

Hello!

I didn't see an official introduction form, but wanted to introduce myself. I've been lurking for a while. :) My name is Nikki. My FI is in the army. He is stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord right now. I have lived in Western WA my entire life, FI is from the East Coast.

This summer it looks like we will be moving to Ft. Bragg. I’m nervous because I have never moved out of state and this means giving up my career. Trying to look at it as though it is a new adventure at the beginning of our married lives (8 days until the wedding!) and hey, that’s a part of marrying someone in the army, but I have not heard flattering comments about Ft. Bragg from other army spouses so I am a bit apprehensive. Regardless, we'll make the best of it though. Anyway, we don’t have kids yet, but do have a needy, chubby, adorable orange cat named Bubba.

With 8 days to go I’m in big time wedding mode, but I thought it would be nice to meet some other military brides. Thanks for reading!

    Welcome to the board.

I live about 4 hours from JBLM. Congrats on the wedding. I got married yesterday.

    Do you have dress pictures?
Military Brides December 2011 Siggy. Holiday picture with your SO. We suck and don't have one :/ Those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter.

    Welcome to the board!
My H is also stationed here in Washington state :) We are up at NAS Whidbey though.  We just got married up in Bellingham about a month ago! :)

I don't like Ft. Bragg, but regardless of whether you like it or not, that's where you're moving.. Try to keep an open mind and don't look at the negative aspects. It's incredibly different than Washington, but that's the fun of moving! Experience a new state, a new culture, new food, new hikes and sports. It's part of marrying into the military, but I'm sure you know that by now :o) Washington is wonderful (most of my family is here, and both of my parents are originally from here so I love it very much) but new experiences help you grow as a person, and as a couple.
    You'll make it work :)
What's the career you're giving up? (and don't say you're giving up your CAREER! just your particular employer for now ;) )

Welcome! I also have a chubby, needy, orange cat, mine's Huck.

As far as Ft. Bragg goes, the only things I know about it I learned from "Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives" by Tanya Biank. Which is actually an interesting book, but not really super-helpful in this case, I think it was written in '03 or so.

Thanks for the welcomes! I hope this link works for showing a picture of the dress (on a model).

I do figure that we are going to end up where we end up so might as well just deal with it as positively as possible. I suppose on of my fears is that I AM giving up my career. I am a school counselor, and education jobs, particularly as a counselor, are extremely difficult to find right now. Plus I have to look into seeing if my WA certification even transfers.  Not that I wouldn't mind a break from it, but I do love what I do.

Haha - I read Army Wives too. Nice to know I'm going to a place famous for army spouse violence and murder, eh? ;) FI's parents actually bought me that book, thinking from the title and cute cover that it was a helpful guide to becoming a military spouse - not realizing it was about family violence in the army. I was like...uh...thanks...it was a easy mistake to make though, and kinda funny.

aw yes.. the teacher job is a difficult want to transfer. Hike may have some tips for you with that! She is a teacher   and going through the process of looking for a new job for their new station as well!

lol OOPs to Fi's parents! hahaha... yikes.. O.o

That's a stunning gown! I can't wait to see wedding pictures, and so soon! Don't forget to meet people on the Seattle board! Lots of ladies between Tacoma, up to Bellingham.. I think we have a Seattle G2G this month too! Something to consider ;)

    Welcome, I'm new too = ]
And an extremely premature congrats on your wedding!

While I’m not that seasoned, (only have 1 move under my belt) my best advice for anyone who is about to make their first move with the military, is not to go there with a head full of OTHER peoples negative thoughts.  Everyone has things they love/hate about an area, and more than likely it will vary drastically from what you come to love/hate.

Which Ft. Bragg are we speaking of?

Welcome to the board!!! and congrats on your super soon wedding!! 11/11/11 right? Definitely don't let someone else's opinion cloud your judgement.  In my experience lots of military spouses rag on the places they PCS mostly because they didn't have any say in it, or because their H was gone a lot.  Both of which are not that particular bases' fault, that's the military..  Anyway. I just wanted to welcome you to the board!! (If it's the Ft. Bragg in NC, I live in NC and it's really beautiful, especially this time of year!)

11/12/11 actually - 11/11/11 would have been cute, but we thought it would be easier for most people to make a Saturday wedding. We just chose this weekend because there is the holiday Friday so lots of people have an extra day off and airfare is low right now because everybody waits to fly until Thanksgiving.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone, I really am working on keeping up a positive attitude about our first move. I don't know a thing about NC, so I really can't say anything bad about it.

Hey I was just up at Lewis McCord. I miss it Fi PCSed to Rucker in AL.

I go with what sami(?maybe) said about the move. Don't let other peoples impressions cloud your judgment. Personally Bragg isn't my fav, but the base itself has a lot of facilities and great stuff because it is so large. there are tons of programs and things to do. Personally I don't like the surrounding area, but like i said that is personal. I also know a bunch of people that looove it there. One great thing though is that moving to that area of the east coast gives you great access to a lot of different and amazing places. DC is pretty close, Savannah and Charleston are in range, and the outer banks are right there and personally one of my favorite places on the east coast. So it is a great location for small trips all over the east coast. I love Washington and it was amazing, but i missed the ease of going to so many different places in a 6 hour range. It will be a great experience if you look at it positively. :)

congrats on the upcoming wedding. happy to have you and I'm sure it will all be great.
