Invitation wording issue

All this talk about invitations has me a little panicked!  We are making our invitations, rather, my mother is supposed to be making them, but hasn't done anything on them yet.  This is starting to panick me...so I got on Zazzle.com....found the invitation that was the model for the invites we are making...I love this card...thinking we may end up doing this as I am feeling a little pressured on time.

Question:  How to word the following scenario.  We are registring for our honeymoon!  We also wanted to register at Lowes Homes Improvement Store.  They do not offer a registry.  We have lived together for over 4 years, have a full family of 5 (2 children (13 & 8) from me and 1 (15) from  him....we dont need the traditional things from a registry like plates and silverware...but we do need to replace large appliences such as refrigerator, washer and dryer and the stove...all to big to register for anyay.  We want to put something in there to the effect that if you didn't want to go the honeymoon gift route, we would like Lowes gift cards....how do you say that tho?
And has anyone used Zazzle?  I need a toal of like 60 invites......

Re: Invitation wording issue

  • Someone correct me if I'm wrong but nothing about registering goes on the wedding invite. It would be ok to put on a bridal shower invite depending on how it was worded. So your best bet is word of mouth and honestly with only 60 people I'm sure they know your family situation and know you don't need kitchenware and bath linens. They are going to get you what they see fit.

  • I've used Zazzle (just posted about a 20% off code so be sure to use that if you can order in time) and they have been great so far.  I haven't received my postage, but they emailed me verifying everything before they started production.

As for the registry thing - you aren't supposed to say anything about your registry on your invitations.  A lot of people make a website and have an info card with the website listed on there.  I'd recommend saying something like, "For accommodation and registry information, please visit our website at www.abc.com".

I'm doing a honeymoon registry through honeyfund and I know they have the option to ask for gift certificates on there for certain dollar amounts.  I'd just do that and maybe say that you will be using these gift cards to go towards new home appliances or something like that.  I'm not sure how else you would ask for lowes gift cards...

  • Mentioning on your wedding website (if you have one) where you are registered and what you are saving for (appliances and such). I wouldn't put any requests regarding gifts/registries in or on the invitation though.

  • Okay...starting to make sense!  Thanks ladies!  So....our travel agent has inserts printed that are supposed to go in the invit that shows we are registred through the travel agent and how to give to the registry for the honeymoon....I was under the impression that this insert was supposed to go in the invite...am I wrong??????
    We have 120 people invited...only 60 invites...to clarify...thanks again for the feedback and I saw the 20% off..thank you!!! :)

  • Don't mention registries on your invitations, you can put it on your website and spread by word of mouth that you want cash for honeymoon/appliances/whatever.

The travel agent gave you those inserts because s/he will be making money if people use them, not because she cares about etiquette or keeping you from being rude.
  • No registry info goes in your wedding invites AT ALL!  I actually just got invited to a wedding where they included registry cards with their invite...SO TACKY!  Technically, wedding guests do not have to give you a wedding gift at all (FI and I always do, but still).  I think it's fine to include the registry cards in a shower invite, but absolutely NOT ok for it to go in a wedding invite.   The stores that give you the registry cards are doing so for their own best interets, it's free advertising for them.

If you want to put your registry information somewhere, put it on your wedding website if you have one.  If not, spread the info via word of mouth.

I was actually reading a knot post awhile ago where someone actually mails the registry cards back to the bride if she gets one in a wedding invite LOL!

  • Oh WoW....I'm so glad I posted this...I did not realize....I get it now tho....I have been working on the wedding web site....I'll need to finish it up and put the registry info in there....

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE FEEDBACK!  I don't know that anyone is going to throw me a shower?  I haven't heard anything about it....seems like I would have if there was going to be one, right?

  • Yeah definitely don't put those in the invites!  It's tacky and they do not belong.  Yeah, Macy's also gave me a whole stack of little inserts too.  Don't do it.  Just add a small insert pointing to your website where you can include that info, as well as having your family spread the word.

About a shower, a lot of girls are just getting offers from family recently.  I would wait a while.....they usually happend within a month or two of the wedding, so there's a little time.  Perhaps your WP is already planning to....but if no one offers, don't go asking for one.

    Good luck on the invites!

  • For the Lowe's cards, if you and your fiance are somwhat cinematically inclined, you could put up a cute video of you two doing yardwork or other home-improvement things. It's Olympic season--you could cheese it up and act like you're doing huge events instead of mundane chores, and put a note in the video credits saying guests can sponsor your heroics through gift cards to your favorite home improvement stores.

What a cute idea!  FI is getting ready to have major knee surgery next week...don't think he would be up for it...the whole knee surgery is already throwing a major kink in all wedding plans and events, but such a cute idea!!!!

  • Yes, definitely have it on the website. I also recommend using honeyfund.com It's free for you and people can donate set amounts towards your honeymoon and also to other things like appliances. Check it out, it may be the route you want to go! That way the travel agent doesn't get more than is necessary.
