Swimming should help some, it is still a cardio workout. I'd definately make sure you stretch your muscles.

Maybe take a warm bath and then stretch each muscle or achy part for a good 20-30 seconds, this way your muscles are nice and loose.
  • I have found the most important thing is stretching to warm up before you work out and to make sure and have protein right after your workout. Ibuprofen before bed will help as well. When I started I was sore nearly everyday and I started off with a trainer five days a week and am still going strong. Working through it the next day (believe it or not) will help. Hang in there!!!

  • When I'm that sore it actually helps me to get moving. I think swimming is a good idea or maybe a jog or fast walk followed by a nice long stretch. I know I always cringe when I start but once the blood gets flowing I feel a lot better.

  • Yep protein right after.  Costco or Sam's Club sells protein for great prices.  Also sometimes grocery stores sell it in the sections with the food in bins.  That way it is not so expensive.

Protein is very important and should be taken within 20 or 30 minutes after your workout for the best benefits.

  • Drink more fluids! Soreness is a build-up of lactic acid in your muscles. Protein helps the muscles repair themselves, and water helps flush out the lactic acid.

When I was running on the track team, our coach would make us run a few sprints after long slow distance training. I don't know the science behind it but it kept me from getting sore after 4 -5 miles of running.

And as PPs said, stretching will help prevent injury and soreness.

  • oh yeah, and even though its counter-intuitive, working out today will help warm and loosen your muscles up, as well as flush more lactic acid. So, you can take down the intensity and I'd stay away from weights, but definitely still work out!

  • Def protein 20-30 min after your workout, stretch and drink tons of water to flush out lactic acid.  Going walking always makes me feel less sore and then also if you have a foam roller those work well too

  • Hey. What actually helps me, even at the most sore you can be, is to workout. Maybe not at your highest ability, but stick to it. Make yourself do it and it will slowly go away. Your body gets use to it. That's how it is when I do p90x, which I am trying to remotivate myself to get back to it. When I started it I got sore two days after and so I stuck to it no matter if it was sore and I got over that feeling fast. Strange, even to myself, but it worked.
