Ring Sizing Question???

My boyfriend has gotten me an engagement ring, and the jeweler he bought from wants $100 to size it down. Is this price a little steep, especially since they do not have to add any metal to it? Thanks!

I'm not sure that's the best price top pay for sizing down. Did he get a warranty on the ring? If so, it should be free or at least discounted.

Is it through the same jewelry place that he bought the ring from?

If so, usually it is free. (I got my diamond (not setting) through a local mom & pop place & I get one resize for the ring & check every year free, so it isn't just the big name stores).

If not from that store, then the price isn't that bad (if it is several sizes down & they need to reset stones).

I've had a couple white gold rings resized to a larger size at a local mom and pop shop and it was 25$ both times. I'd ask around at other places before taking it to the place you mentioned.

Mine cost $35 to resize. Went from a 7.5 to a 6.5.

My rings are from zales and they can go up or down 2 sizes for free. I'm not sure what the charge would be if it needed to go more than that.

When FI got my ring from Kay he purchased the "Extended Service Plan" this covers unlimited amount of resizings, which would normally be about $100 each time it is resized. But depending on the jeweler, this is usually something that is covered by purchasing the ring.

The mom and pop place my FI got my ring from my engagement ring is free to resize for life but the other rings I have itll only be $25 to make them smaller.

You're right, it is included with the service plan, which does depend on the price you paid for the jewelry. I got one with a $5000 purchase that was about $90. I highly recommend getting the plan. It covers repronging, replacement diamonds, redipping, etc. for life as long as you get it cleaned and inspected every 6 months. The one I go to says they are pretty lenient on the policy, my fiance traded in jewelry that wasn't cleaned or inspected in 5 years and they were fine with it. I have a $100 necklace that lost a diamond stone once and the chain broke another time, both were replaced for no extra charge.

Yeah, my ring went from a size 8 to a 4 and it only cost us about $25. Although as PP said, if you have tons of diamonds on your band that they have to watch out for, maybe that has something to do with the steep price?

Thanks, there are a lot of diamonds on the shank of the ring so I guess that is why!

Any ring I've ever had has come with a free re-size from the store it came from.

My e-ring actually had to be re-sized twice, and that meant it had to be sent back to the manufacturer twice. The jeweller did it for free both times (although the second time was because he talked me into getting it a half-size too big in the first place).

If you have a warrenty on it it should be free or cost less. I don't know what the ring looks like but like a PP said, if they have to reset the diamonds it could get a little pricy. I guess it also depends on what kind of warrenty, if any, is on the ring.

My suggestion is to shop around. We got quotes that were from 20$ to 150$. We wound up going witha local family owned business and got teh best service and an awesome price. 60$ to resize it up half a size, tighten teh setting, and repair a crack in the metal ( heirloom ring)
