How do I fly my wedding Dress?

Hi,

I am having a destination wedding.  I need to get my dress from Boston to Florida.  The Airline cannot gaurantee in advance any closet space.  Do I risk it and bring the dress in a garment bag and hopefully get it into a closet or overhead compartment? Do I try to package it in some sort of box and risk it not making the flight as checked luggage?

I am not sure how to get my dress to travel.

Re: How do I fly my wedding Dress?

  • I flew my dress from Boston to Tennessee in the overhead bin--I just carefully rolled up the bag, placed it in the bin, and we steamed it before the wedding to get the wrinkles out. It needed steaming prior to being crammed in the bin, so it wasn't a big deal.

I would not risk putting it in a box and having it put under the plane. Just sounds too risky to me.
  • FI and I went to Jamaica in April for a DW.  I cannot tell you how many girls I saw in the airports with big white garment bags.  Like PP said, bring it on the plane with you.  Don't put it in your checked luggage in case they lose it.

  • Try to make sure you're seated in the back of the plane... They load from the back so there will be plenty of overhead room when you board.

  • I'm going the opposite direction, from Florida to Boston! Definitely take the dress on the plane with you. Try to get in on the first group that is seated so you have a better change of getting closet space or space in an overhead bin. Luckily the type of material my dress is made of has a slightly wrikled appearance so that if it gets a little wrinkled in travel, it won't make a big difference.

  • I'm flying from DC to San Francisco with my dress.  The salon chain offered to steam my for free when I get to San Francisco.
  • Wow you have all given me so much to think about.  The dress I bought is a silk Organza Priscilla of Boston.  I checked out the salon's store locator and they do have one in Orlando, where I will be flying in.  Perhaps I could now work something out Between the Boston & Orlando Salon's to help with the steaming once I land!
  • Sounds like a good idea! If not, you can get one of those cheap handheld steamers and DIY, or see if your hotel has a steamer on premises.
  • I know a lot of the girls on the Vegas board ship their dress ahead of time to a business that specializes in pressing and steaming wedding gowns.  Maybe there's something like that in Florida?  Then you don't even have to worry about the plane, it will be ready and waiting at your destination.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
