Retin A

Hey Ladies! I've been using retin A for my acne prone, acne scarred skin for about 7 months. It's really improved the texture of my skin and break outs, if I get any zits now they usually go away within a day, whereas they used to turn into big cystic bumps and take weeks to clear up. I am still trying to tackle my acne scars though, using sunscreen everyday and exfoliating often, but I recently booked a facial/microdermabrasion treatment with a groupon at a local spa. I am wondering whether I should go off of my retin A before/after the treatment. The receptionist at the spa wasn't very knowledgeable about this, and spoke broken english so it was difficult to get advice. Does anyone with experience with retin A/microderm have any advice about this for me? If anyone is battling the same problem, what are you doing to improve skin tone before your wedding?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Retin A

  • I used to use retin A and it was great for my acne but it definitely made my skin super sensitive. The aesthetician should be knowledgeable about skin medications and how it may react with treatments such as microderm abrasion. I would call back to the salon and ask to speak with the person who will be doing your microderm. If you can't get in touch with them, then I would probably stop the retin a about a week before going.

  • I also use Retin A. When I get facials with the aesthetician at my dermatologist's office, they tell me not to use topical treatments the night before and to just use moisturizer and a gentle cleanser for the next day or two afterwards.

  • Ok, this is a very silly question: how does one get Retin A, and how does one use it?
  • It is a prescription topical ointment. You just apply it to your face after washing. There are a couple of different strenghths. My doctor prescribed it for me, but wanted me to to follow up with a dermatologist to continue to prescribe it.

  • Another positive to retin A: it protects your skin for years to come.  It's a great wrinkle preventer.
  • Thanks for all of your help ladies!!
    Great info :)

I love the changes I've seen in my skin since using retin A and it's great knowing that I'm doing something good for future wrinkles too! My doctor prescribed it for me and my health plan completely covers the cost, so it was definitely worth it! Heads up though, I've heard that you need to be careful using it while you're pregnant/looking to get pregnant because of some of the ingredients, and it makes your skin very sensitive to sun... without spf you can end up with a seriously red face! I'd def ask your doc about it if you can and you're interested in trying it!
