The dreaded budget talk.......

Last night I told FI I was concerned about how we would come up with our portion for the wedding costs (our parents are each paying approx. 1/3) and had to show him the wedding budget spreadsheet I have so he could see where all the dollars have gone. We have now eliminated doing a candy buffet (which was going to be DIY anyhow so I hope we can bring that back later). We wound up talking for over an hour about life and making sacrifices to adhere to a family budget etc. It was a good discussion.......I just hate talking about money. Stresses me out. :(

  • Yeah, that's never fun :-(

At least you and FI are talking about it instead of scrambling later for money, or fighting about it. Weddings definitely make you realize what's important, especially if you're financing it yourselves.

  • It sounds like you had a good talk. I remember showing FI my budget and he looked at it and said, "I have nothing". Everything is so bare bones, there is nowhere to cut. It was great sharing it with him so he could understand my frustrations and we decided together to increase the budget a little.

Definitely keep the dialogue open and it would probably help you more if you could get difinitive committments from FIs parents and your parents. Then you really know what you have left to work with and what kind of timeframe you're looking at.

I agree with this. Being able to talk about finances instead of arguing or fighting is a great thing. We live together and I do the bills so we talk about it often too. FI is always so laid back about it, but I agree with you... It really stresses me out.

We just went through out budget last night. He really likes The Knots budgeter. Shows him what we're paying per service, what our deposits are & what's still owing. I think we're on right track, I just get nervous panic attacks that it won't be enough. If anything, we'll bump up the saving portion an extra $50/ payday (we're putting away $150 every week) closer to May.
