Recommend your tea kettle!

Hi! My FI is pretty set on a classic, whistling stovetop tea kettle. Problem is, I can't seem to find one that has good reviews. All of the reviews I read seem to complain of rusting, plastic melting off, or chipped coating. We are registering at WS, Macy's, and Pottery Barn, but suggestions from any store are welcome! Thank you!

Re: Recommend your tea kettle!

  • For as much as I love tea (drink it every day!), we don't have a tea kettle.  I don't have the patience to fill a kettle and wait for it to heat up when I could pop a mug in the microwave for 2 minutes.

    Good luck on the hunt!
  • We have a cute yellow one from World Market. We don't use it a lot, but it's pretty!
My parents are HUGE coffee drinkers, and when they built their new house they put in an industrial coffee maker hooked up to the water line, so we get hot water instantly when we're there. THAT is my dream one day.

I completely agree! haha Growing up my family didn't have a tea kettle, so I'm more than happy using the microwave. FI, on the other hand, grew up with one and considers it a "comfort" thing.

So, we've had quite a few disagreements over the need for/the nuissance of a tea kettle, haha. Part of me still wishes he'd compromise with an electric kettle, but no luck as of yet!

  • My teakettle takes about 2 min.  I think it's a different heat than the microwave - I always use my kettle.

I had the oxo one for about 3 years and just got tired of the boring color.  I've had a cute blue le creuset one for the last 8 months or so and have had no issues.  The only thing to remember is to always dump the water out and let it dry with the lid off.  That prevents rusting.

  • I really want a Le Creuset kettle, but I think it makes more sense to get an electric one.  They switch off automatically when the water boils, so no chance of forgetting about it.  My grandparents have an electric that is about 10000 years old, and it's awesome.  I'm actually going to look on BBB and Amazon now!
  • I have a Le Creuset stovetop kettle that I love.   But if you're going to be boiling water a lot, I recommend an electric kettle -- it can boil water in like two minutes.

  • OP, you might want to check local outlet malls.  Our has a ginormous le creuset outlet, and I got my kettle for about $25.  I wouldn't have spent $80 to replace a perfectly good one that was just ugly.

I do think you should register for one though - the LC ones are great, priced well for a wedding gift, and add a nice splash of color in your kitchen.  Mine is blue.  I also have a blue LC utensil crock and spoon rest.  I think they look nice all together, and it carries the blue & yellow theme I have going on in there.

  • i have the circulon contempo one (in black) and LOVE it.  its fairly quick and whistles.  if you look it up on amazon, someone bought a red one that they have photos of and claim that the coating came off in 6 weeks from washing it.  i dunno what they're doing with it, but i've used and cleaned mine often in the past 5 months and it still looks brand new.
  • I'd like to add another vote for the Le Creuset kettles! I love my caribbean blue one!

  • Mine is Le Cruset, and I love it. I've also used the zorujshi (sp?) electric ones, and they're great too.
