Wedding Insurance...Buy or Not?

Ladies I would like to poll you all to see if this is even worth the money...I was quoted today a 35,000 wedding insurance policy for $275.00. So

Re: Wedding Insurance...Buy or Not?

  • I bought wedding insurance for sure. I had several friends who had wedding horror stories - one whose photographer used a memory card that was corrupt and didn't have ANY pictures after her ceremony other than the few the 2nd photographer took of the cake and centerpieces.  And another whose venue went out of business and the only thing they refunded her was her deposit. She had 4 months to find a new venue and couldn't find one on the same day so she had to make sure all her other vendors were still available on her new date, redo all the invitations, etc. After those stories I wasn't about to risk it.

Think about it this way, if you bought a new car, a new home, a new expensive something that was the cost of your wedding, would you get it insured? Just some food for thought! :)

  • I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't know there was such a thing!

What exactly do they cover? Maybe I'll do some googling. I mean, I know that if a vendor didn't come through as  promised you can always take them to small claims court so that is an option too.

Don't be embarrased cause I didn't and neither did my FI. From what I gathered, it covers deposits, photos, videos, jewelry, gown and things in that nature if you had to postpone or cancel due to a family illness or if say your venue went belly up and had to book really quickly a new place. I am kinda strongly thinking about it since my venue is a city run place.

<div>Good points. I wonder if it covers weather related disasters too? I'm in NJ, so we mostly don't worry about weather. A little rain or snow wouldn't stop me from getting married, especially since our "hurricanes" are usually no more than fancy thunderstorms. But last year with Hurricane Irene they actually mandatory evaculated everyone on the coast line. In August! That probably hasn't happened since 1970. If your venue was at the Jersey shore during that weekend, oh well.  </div>

  • We bought wedding insurance because it is hurricane season and we are located on the gulf coast. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • Yes. We're getting approx 40,000 in coverage for 355 through Travelers. We're getting married in New Orleans and all my mom can think about are hurricanes. Better to be safe than sorry and not just for weather related disasters, but for all possibilities as listed by pp.

  • I think it would the insurance is great to make sure things are very covered.

  • We aren't getting insurance but our wedding is on the inexpensive side compared to these policies.  We are also inland a little so not worried about weather.  And, we paid all our deposits with a credit card so they are protected by the federal government if a vendor bails.
  • As I see there are more pros than cons with having the wedding insurance. Our wedding is inland as well but also still in tornado season. And they tend to pop up anywhere around my state at a moments notice. Sounds like I am going to go for the wedding insurance. Better be safe than sorry and protect all my investments that are going into this wedding.

You could take them to small claims court, but it would be a long drawn out mess. There were some knotties on the Chicago page who signed a contract with a start up videographer who shot their wedding but never delivered the videos. I believe one of the clients took him to court and its a year-plus later and they haven't seen any money back or any video. (from what I recall, can't remember the exact story).

Chances are (and fingers crossed!) nothing will go wrong. I have another friend who did not buy the insurance and her wedding was fine and had no problems! Guess it just depends on each individual situation.
