Protein shakes?

I am working PT in a grocery store and have noticed a lot of people buying protein powder and drink bottles to mix their protein drinks in - can someone explain this to me? Why, what, how much, when, etc?

Thanks!

This is my absolute favorite site for protein shake recipes: http://dashingdish.com/recipe/dashing-dish-official-protein-shake/ Her receipes are seroiusly amazing!!

I use Designer Whey protein. I find it at vitamin world or GNC. I've seen it online. It's about 100 calories per scoop. The important thing with shakes, because they can be pretty high in calories, is to make sure you have enough calories that day to actually have one. Since I work out in the morning I typcially use a protein shake as my breakfast. On days I don't do cardio I typically don't have enough calories set aside for a shake. I don't eat a lot of meat so this helps me keep my protein levels up.

  • Personally, I don't use protein power when I make my shakes.....i have found that it just adds on excess weight and if you don't work it all off, it basically turns into pounds. I make a shake with non fat plain greek yogurt, frozen fruit, skim milk, and a shot of orange juice, along with a few splenda packets, and it is AMAZING!! You get your natural protein, fruit, and dairy all in one. Try it out :)

  • I mix a scoop of protein (also Designer Whey!) with 12-16 oz. water in a blender bottle after my workouts. One scoop is just over 100 calories, and I typically burn at least a few hundred calories in a workout, so it's not setting me back. I used to mix it with milk, but the sugar/calories got to be pretty high, and though it took a few days to get used to vanilla water, it's grown on me and I look forward to it after a workout!

  • I'm a store manager at the Vitamin Shoppe so this is my specialty. You really only need about 20-30g of protein per serving. Shakes are a great way to get those meals in. Typically people should be consuming about 6 small meals per day.
My favorite is Nitro Pro and I mix it with about 8-10 oz. of water. Post workout I will add fruit and mix with Almond milk.. I add the fruit and almond milk because my body also needs the carbs and fat post workout. I do 1 hour of boxing 3-4 times a week 2-3 days of weight training and on my off boxing days I will do a quick 30 min. run.
I also use a blender bottle.

Protein powders will not turn into pounds, it's all about what you are consuming as a whole throughout the day. Protein is the best form of calories and your muscles will use it up more than it will carbs or fat sources. Protein powders if you get the right kind will have less sugar, fat, and carbs than many other sources. That's the misconception with protein powders is they are for bodybuilders. It's really not. It's for anyone who does not get enough protein in their diet through typical foods. I sell protein powders to cancer patients and the elderly because they are not consuming enough protein.

I don't like the idea of powdered protein shakes. I might feel different if I was a big time worker outer. I DO like Carnation Instant breakfast. Tastes good. Great breakfast. Diet friendly.
