holiday weekend wedding -- thoughts?

Hey y'all,

I'm looking at dates in early September 2011, and because almost all of our guests (including immediate family) will have to travel, I like the idea of doing it on Labor Day weekend because it gives people extra time to travel -- however, airfare and hotel rates will be more expensive.

Does anyone have a personal anecdote about a Labor Day/Memorial Day Weekend wedding? How did you weigh your options and decide? Ceremony and reception vendor cost are not an issue because we're getting married on a family member's ranch -- but other vendor cost might be.

Thanks!

  • We're getting married this Labor Day and people have been generally positive about it. We're getting married in MI and we have a lot of way out of town guests (think Alaska), so it definitely works for us. And if people whine, oh well! You don't want them at your wedding anyway methinks.

  • It really depends on your individual guests. Are your friends and family the type that would be glad they don't have to take off as much work? Or are they the type that are going to be bummed that you are taking away their holidy? It all depends on your guests and you know them best. My family would love something like that because it would give them more travel time without cutting into work. But my FI's family would hate it because that's when they do a big family camping trip (all three day weekends!) and they would be completely bummed to miss out on that.

  • depends on where you are....i know when we were looking at venues in Green Bay they actually said that weekend they DON'T fill up so we could get some upgrades (unfortunately the church was not free) now we are getting married during Packer season so the hotel rates will be higher....just weigh it out.

  • I had a Memorial weekend wedding (on Sunday) and it was just fine.  Most of my guests had to travel including myself, DH, and the majority of the BP.  We booked our tickets about 6 months in advanced and the price wasn't much different than what they normally are.  We blocked hotel rooms and got a really good rate.  I really didn't see any rises in prices but that may be because we booked everything early.

We decided to do it on that weekend because I was in school and needed a little more time for the wedding since I would be flying.  It also allowed some of our BP to fly in and out without missing a day of work.  We also received discounts from our vendors because it was a Sunday wedding so we saved some money.

  • Holiday weekends are nice in my opinion bc of the bonus day off on Monday - esp if I have to travel. I am travelling to a wedding on Labor Day of this year and it definitely is nicer to know FI and I will have a day of "us" time before having to go back to work. Go for it!
