How much to pay hair stylists for wedding up-do's?

My future sister-in-law is a hair stylist, and the owner of the salon she is employed at gave us permission to use the salon to bring in outside stylists to do up-do's for my upcoming wedding. Each stylist will end up doing 2-3 up do's each. I will be providing pins and hair product. So the big question is, how much should I pay each of these ladies for their time, the up do's, milage, etc.? I am looking for a flat number to pay each stylist. Has anyone else had a similar situation, and if so, how did you go about paying? Also, would it be appropriate to have each bridesmaid pitch in for their hair style? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. P.S. On an off-note, how much time should I allow for hair; would 3 hours be enough time?

  • Honestly, this is totally based on your region. I know nothing about where you are.. I know that in Washington state that kinda thing would run anywhere between 50-120 a person.

If you are wanting them to get their hair done then I suggest you pay for it...
I gave my girls the choice and 2/3 wanted it, so they paid for it.
I did, however, choose to pay for their make up as a "thank you for gettin your butt up crazy early and helping me" (it was not part of their WP gift.. just a night gesture)

3 hours for them doing 3 girls each = an hour a girl... I would suggest a little more time than that just to make sure that you aren't rushed.

You should allow an hour for hair for yourself, and normally I would say 30 minutes for each BM, but maybe allow a little more for updos.

If you are requiring the BMs to have a certain look (like an updo) or to have their hair professionally styled, you need to foot the bill.  Otherwise you can give them the choice to use a professional stylist (and pay for it), or do their own hair.

As for payment--I would think that the stylists you hire will let you know what their fee is.

My stylist usually takes 2 hours for my up-dos. My hair is longer and when I ask for it curled, it takes more time. If your girls have short hair then the time would be different. The stylist's probably have their own set price and may be different than the other stylist coming in. Some might charge more for different hair styles. I paid $100 for my updo in Hawaii, $75 for Philly, and $50 from my home town, so it does vary on location also. I also agree if you are telling the girls they have to get their hair done then you would pay, if it's an option, your BMs should pay if they decide to get it done.

  • Find out what the going rate of an updo is in your area by calling local salons.  Pay that much per person.

  • It also varies from types of salon. Upscale salons in my area might charge $200, but you can easily get an updo at a walk in place for $35 - $50. and you can go to a school and get on for  $30.  And there is everything in between as well. What area are you in? How far are they driving? What sort of salon are they working in normally? Are they friends of yours and doing this partially as a favor? I would think there is all sorts of things to consider if they haven't given you a price.
