OT: Speak to me of chickpeas.

I have six cans of chickpeas in my cabinet. Six, because I forgot that I had three cans in my cabinet already and bought three more at the store the other day. So now I have way more chickpeas than I need for the recipe I needed them for, and no idea what else I can do with 'em.

R's mom called him today about something else and before she hung up he asked her what to do with them. All she could say was, “Make channa.” And didn’t elaborate.

Oooookay. I don’t even know what “channa” is, let alone how to make it. His mother lives 3 hours away and is unavailable to teach me, and my mother wouldn't know either. How do I make that? And what else can I do with chickpeas? Side dishes? Main dishes? What do I serve with them?

HELP!

I would assume that your MIL is talking about channa masala or chole:

There are lots of other recipes out there if you google. She's right though - it's a great way to use those extra cans you have! You can serve it with basmati or naan.

You could also make hummus with the chickpeas?

I use a lot of those...

You can add them to spinach with a little garlic and cumin.  You can also cook them with chicken in the Middle Eastern style, or make hummus or a chickpea salad.

    My chole recipe is:

heat oil and add one at a time:

    a pinch of asafoetida

1 tsp. cumin, until seeds pop

one onion, chopped, until it is soft and starts to brown

3 cloves garlic, minced, until golden

1 or 2 tomatoes, chopped, until soft

    2 tsp fresh ginger

    then add together:

2 or 3 cans of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
    1 or 2 green chilies
    2 tsp. ground cumin
    salt
    1 tsp. garam masala
    4 tbsp cilantro, chopped
    1 tbsp lime juice
and 1 1/4 cups brewed black tea (I use this to make the garbanzos look roasted, but it doesn't really add a taste, so you could just use water)

Mmm I love chole, it's my favorite. My mother always experiments with hers, she's even used brown sugar in the masala before-- delicious!
