Roaring 20's theme

Does anyone have some awesome ideas for a 1920s themed wedding? I love the whole gangster and flapper style. Was originally looking at a colonial theme, but I like this one a lot more.

Location is great to set the mood, if you haven't already picked. You can often find places famous gangsters were known to congregate still operating with similar decor, or any building with some sexy craftsman or deco flair.

You've also got a great musical selection like swing and jazz to crowd the dance floor without losing the feel.

Cigars are a great treat if many attendees like them, you can afford them and have a place they won't smoke out the other guests.

Some details like a dropped waist on your dress or spectator shoes on the guys could punch up the outfits without much effort since the fashions look quite contemporary unless you go full costume. I'm normally not huge on the garter toss, but I think it'd be really cute at a roaring '20s wedding, especially if it's pinstriped and has a flask or something.
  • i'm also having a 1920's themed wedding.  I've also been having some trouble thinking of how to incorporate the 20's into my wedding w/o it looking like a themed costume party or something.

We picked an old manor house for our ceremony that was built in the 20's and our reception hall has vintage decor and an old wooden bar.

Wish i could help more...but thats about as far as we've gotten w/ planning.  Hope everything goes well for you and feel free to share you creative 20's ideas!

  • Try Unique Vintage for flapper style dresses - perhaps for BM.  You can look at fingerwaves for hairstyles or a Louise Brooks bob. Think dark woods at the bar area.  Art Deco fonts  for signage or invites.  A speakeasy sort of vibe or a guys and dolls thing?  Try and watch some old movies from the era and see if you pick up on some details you like.

  • Oh how neat!
I don't know if I have much more to add than the PPs.
I would start with your stationary to get a jump. Look at art deco designs and maybe build from there.
When I think of location I picture a dimly lit area with wooden everything (from floor to bars).
I would love to see what you come up with.
  • I love what everybody's come up with!  I'll probably cover some of the same territory, but it's late and I'm tired, so that's my excuse!

Things I think of when I think about the 1920s...

Prohibition - Perhaps you could pretend your reception is at a speakeasy?  Or, in a smaller way, somehow make the bar seem like a speakeasy?

Definitely Art Deco (Deco style invites have already been mentioned, so I'll add that a friend had Deco graphics put on her cake.)

    F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby"

    Agatha Christie

    The Charleston

    Bobbed hair...headbands...mink stoles...

I've mentioned it before, but there's a great clothing site you might want to look at:
    leluxeclothing.com

They also have a bridal page:

And on their blog, you can click on an article that appeared in BBC's Homes and Antiques magazine.  The bride in it wore one of their dresses, and you can click on each of the 2 pages of the article to make them bigger...then click on them again to super size them, if you want to read the article.

Music will really add to the feel of your day/night.  If you're not going to have a live band, maybe you can track down CDs put out by Living Era.  They gather terrific vintage songs and put them out on CDs such as "Flappers, Vamps and Sweet Young Things," "The Charleston Era," and "Hits of 1922," "Hits of 1923," etc.  (Also, the same friend who put Deco graphics on her cake also found a vintage record player and played vintage records at her 1920s-inspired wedding reception.)

I guess that's all for now.  Hopefully, others will add onto this!
