S/O Smart Phones

Am I the only one without a smart phone?  If you don't have one, why don't you?

I don't have one because I can't bear to spend the extra $50 or so a month and would rather spend that on something else.

Re: S/O Smart Phones

  • I'm with joesgurl. I've been surprised, however, by how readily my other family members have adopted a couple smart phones. They usually have the absolute cheapest, most simple cell phones possible.
  • I don't have one. I have a regular cell phone with texting and calling and can't justify the extra money for data when I have a computer and wifi at school and home. The only time I don't have access is in the car and surfing while driving is unsafe anyways! My H has an iPhone and I do love it though.
  • I have an iPhone. I wish I didn't though-- it's not worth the extra money and I let it consume too much of my time, lol.

  • I have an Android.  I've had a smartphone for about 2 years now.  Not sure how I lived without it, haha. I use the e-mail app ALL THE TIME, I love the Kindle app because I can read books at lunch without carrying books around, the GPS  navigator has helped me get to where I'm going more than once, and I'd be lost without my calendar!  Haha.

[QUOTE]I *just* got one.  I already had a data plan, so this one ended up not costing me anything extra.  It's soooo nice though, so much nicer than my old non-smart but internet capable phone. <strong>And it shouldn't cost you $50 extra a month.  My data plan is only $15!</strong>

agree, my data plan is only $30 extra. I have to have it for work. I have to have immediate access to weather and radar for inclement weather when i am outside for practices and games. I love being able to pull it up on my phone and show it to the hardheaded coaches and/or refs who don't always believe me when I say everyone needs to go inside.

I don't have a smart phone.  I currently pay about $60 per month for a simple cell phone plan, which I think is ridiculous... $30 more doesn't seem that much, but I still can't bare to spend all that extra money.  I feel like cell phone companies are trying to force us into smart phones when my simple cell phone works just fine.  When I'm out with people, I definitely like spending time with people rather than with my smart phone (I know many people don't have bad manners, but I get annoyed when I'm having dinner with someone and when I'm talking they start looking at their blackberry or something).  Anyways, I have my laptop with me almost all the time due to school... I have a Macbook Air, so I can easily access the Internet and email when I'm not at home.
  • I just got my smartphone in August.  DH and I are on a family plan with his parents and brother, so it's something like $92/mo.  It still feels like a lot to me, but I think of it as one of our splurges; DH thinks of it as a necessity because he does need HIS for work, so I guess only mine is really a splurge.

  • I have one. I have $15/month data plan, but I frequently go over my data and that's another $15, lol.

  • FI and I each have blackberries, but we also own our own business and use it frequently for business purposes which is why I am ok with spending the extra money. Until we had the business, I always had a regular phone.

    What do you coach?
  • I not only don't have a smart phone, I don't have a cell phone at all anymore. I had to get rid of mine during the summer because I couldn't afford it (after a little more than a year of unemployment) and at this point I don't plan on getting one again until after I've moved to India.  I did get a seasonal job (first employment in 19 1/2 months) but it's gone now, but since it was temporary that didn't make sense.  Even if I got a steady job up until the day I leave for India I don't think I'd get a cell phone, even though I miss having one, because every dollar spent could be better spent in or getting me to India. I'm a woman with a goal.

  • Getting in here late, but I don't have a smart phone. I'm too cheap to pay for a data plan!!

</div><div>Same! Haha. I don't surf websites on my phone, I just check my email on it. But even so, I end up going over my data allowance. The problem is that, unless you keep an old phone for many years, it's difficult to find any phones now that aren't smart phones. There are some out there, but not many. Mine is a Palm Pixi, so I'm not as far advanced as an iphone, but my H has one. </div><div>
</div><div>I do more of my internet surfing on the macbook or my kindle fire. </div>

I looked into a data plan with our current carrier (Verizon) and the data package was $30 (2GB) or $50 (5GB).  Plus if I got one, DH would want one.  That would be double the price.

So what service providers do you all use?

  • We have AT&T.  I'm not sure what it really costs us because we're on a family plan with my parents, but I know my data options were $15, $25 or $40 (I think, I never actually looked at the highest). H and  I have 200 texts for $5 each and we all share 750 minutes with rollover.  For 4 phones, two with texting and one with data, we pay about $110 a month, including taxes.
  • We have Verizon. I pay $15 for my data, which is only like 150 MB or something. H pays $30 for his and he has unlimited. But these packages and prices were a special they were running at the time we got them. They don't offer them anymore for new data packages.
