Do you know what metering lights are?

I get someone at least twice a week looking at me like this:

when I tell them that I moved to Colorado from California.

I'm not entirely sure what people who are not from California (and possibly have never been to California) think California is like. What do they think it looks like? What do YOU think California looks like?

I'm not sure people realize how incredibly expensive California is- and I don't think a lot of people (especially in Colorado) know what metering lights are. A lot of metering lights in California come on at 3 PM....3 PM!!

I literally get to see this everyday-

Why would someone want to move AWAY from Colorado?

I have no idea what a metering light is. But I do know that California is an expensive place to live and I also know that I don't think I'd like to live there. BF's parents want to move to California when they retire and his sister goes to college there right now.

Also a lot of Colorado is really ugly. You happen to live in the very pretty part of Colorado but as a whole the state isn't that pretty.

I have no idea what metering lights are haha.

I guess I picture California as SOCAL if that makes sense. The only two people I know that moved/are from there is a girl who went to Pepperdine (in beautiful Malibu) and one who went to my school that is from Orange County. Pairing that with the media, my views are in a tiny bubble!

I also don't know what they are. I've only ever seen Venice Beach, so that's what I think it looks like, lol. That and the highway, which scared the daylights out of me! I think that Colorado would be my preferred state to live in if I were to move. I loved it there!

HA!  Metering lights SUCK when I am tring to get on the dang freeway.  Yes I am from CA born and raised in the SF Bay Area.  It is very expensive here which is one of the reasons we are considering moving out to Texas.  It's hard to leave this area though when I have a metropolitan area (SF) 1 hour away, beautiful Lake Tahoe area 1.5 hours away, the beach 1.5 hours away and some of the best wine country in the world 1 hour away.  I'm a norcal snob.  I don't care much for So. Cal...they don't say hella! :P

I went to California a few years ago and just didn't like it. I can't remember where we went, my dad was on a business trip so the rest of the family came along. We went to a few different places and I found them like most other big cities.

I moved from the Toronto area to Thunder Bay and everyone thinks that was just crazy to do. I find the weather to be nearly the same here as it is there, and we don't have nearly as much traffic. We don't have as much 'stuff' to do here, but its a very outdoorsy place and I enjoy it.

And add me to the list of people who don't know what Metering lights are.

    Iunno what metering lights are.

I live in Nova Scotia.  We have low (ish) costs of living but don't make much so it kind of balances out, I suppose.  lol

And on the topic of people not knowing things about where you're from: I get it.  I totally get it.  What do YOU know about Nova Scotia?;)

Metering lights are when the freeway is SOOO busy...so packed...so NOT moving...that you have to WAIT to get ONTO the freeway. ::sigh:: It totally sucks...

Sometimes it can take 20 minutes to get onto a freeway or bridge.

I hated metered lights.  But only when I don't have a passenger.  I love where I live; I really think I live in one of the most beautiful parts of CA, mountains, trees, low traffic.  I have been all over CA and I like it best here.  However, it is soooo expensive.  For us to live in an apartment at Davis it is like $1,000s per month.  Gag.  And Davis isn't the city!

<div>Driving from one end of the City to the other here takes 15 minutes with traffic. When my work sends me to the other side of town I get miserable because its going to take 'forever' to get there, when they send me to the country I'm even more miserable that that only takes 40mins max... I can't imagine being in a big City again where it would take me 30mins+ to make it one  highway exit</div>

That sounds awful! lol. I've only ever really been in a handful of traffic jams where I had to wait up to, at most, a half hour, lol. They've all been in the last 4 years that I've been in college/graduated too. One happened to be on my way to an interview, so that sucked, but where I grew up and where I live now, I wait longer for the slow traffic lights to turn green than I do on the people on the highway or in town, lol.

I didn't know they were called metering lights, but I guessed correctly that those are the things we deal with to get on the highway in the afternoon. We have them here in Arizona. They are slightly annoying, but probably do prevent backups because it alternates lanes to let people on.

I don't know anything about Nova Scotia but my grandfather is from Quebec.  I've only been to Niagra Falls which is an amazing site but there are many places that I've heard are just beautiful to visit.  It's on the bucket list!

Orangehills- ick on driving near the niner game...sucks no BART.

The worst driving that I have encountered though was the Beltway in DC..it puts 80/880 to SHAME!

One of the scariest experiences I had while driving was merging onto the Mass Turnpike from Connecticut. I thought I was TOTALLY going to get in a car accident. Everyone is heading to the tolls- and all of a sudden all the lanes disappear and people are just going wherever they want! Scary!

Oh, the metering light. It probably makes my commute 5-10 minutes longer each way. I read the title and thought it was an odd thing to ask about. And the one I pass in the morning is still on even after carpool is over. I think it goes from 6-10am!

A few other fun driving related things. Bridge tolls are $5 now (I think) with the Golden Gate bridge at $6. In Seattle, you only pay a bridge toll until the bridge is paid off, and after that, it's free.

I was baffled by toll roads in Florida. It's a very strange concept to me.

Metering lights suck balls. When Tyler wanted to go to Los Angeles when we visited my grandmother in May, I said that it was fine but that we had to go on Sunday to avoid all of that madness.

I've been to every region of California, so I have an idea of just how different the state is. It's crazy. But because my family is from Newport Beach, that's how I think of California. When I go to California, I fly into Santa Ana and usually don't leave the Newport Beach/Santa Ana/Laguna Beach area the entire time I'm there; well, except to take the Flyer to Catalina. I'm perfectly content to spend the vast majority of my time in the area contained between the Balboa Peninsula and Big Corona then never going further inland than my Grandma's house a whole mile and a half away from the PCH. It's my itty bitty world.

My Daddy gets that face a lot when he tells people that he moved to Tennessee from California. He never wants to live in California again but loves to visit. Colorado is premium though. My parents were planning to move there but then my sister left CU and they decided they didn't have a reason to move out there anymore. That's just a weird reason.

I have never in my life heard of metering lights.

Leia: the toll for the Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, & George Washington Bridge (all going into NYC from NJ) is up to $12 now! TWELVE DOLLARS! Isn't that insane?!
