  I would skip the cards completely for everyone and call the ones who live far away on the phone and the one's that live close by ask in person.
  
  Honestly, in my opinion, cards are impersonal.  I would much rather get a phone call from my friend then a card in the mail which I would then have to "rsvp" my answer.

  Just pick up the phone and ask.  The wedding industry tries to make you think of how to make every single little thing special but seriously, nobody really cares about these sorts of things. 
  
  Also, if they are not close to you, why are you asking them?  Your FI can have them stand on his side.

  You don't need to do anything like this. Just ask. Also, ditto the PP who brought up that you do not have to have these ladies stand up with you unless you really want to. FI can have them as "groomswomen."

  You don't need to take them out to lunch or dinner or make a production out of asking them.  Just ask them directly without being "cute."
  
  You're asking them to take on the expense of getting an outfit and showing up at a specific time and place as an "honor."  Be serious about it.  Being "cute" when you ask them can suggest to them that you don't take the commitment you're asking them to make seriously.

  Another advocate for just asking them.  It would be much more special for me to receive an excited phone call from a friend than to get a cutesey card or (worse yet) a box full of junk that is related to the wedding.  

  
  

  If a bride were to ask me in a cutesey way, I would assume she was going to be high-maintenance about the wedding and be the type of bride who thinks bridesmaids have "duties..." and I'd find a reason I couldn't be in her wedding.

  Just ask.  I called mine on the phone or visited them in person if they were close enough.  Trust me, you'll have plenty of things to be creative and "cute" with during the wedding planning.  Save your energy!

  I made a I guess info box with their name on it. I bought the box from Michaels craft store, painted it one of my wedding colors, wrote their name on it in another wedding color and inside were sheets with information. the one had all the girls I wanted in the bridal party, their name and how i know them & why i chose them, the other sheet had the information of the wedding like the time, place etc. the other sheet had what i invision the dresses to be like and that they can have any style just my colors. I also included paint chips of the colors of the wedding and pictures of some ideas in the wedding.
