Seating Arrangement Questions

So I understand how to make a seating arrangement. And I understand that I need to put name cards at each seat at the appropriate tables. I understand about numbering (or whatever, some people do A-Z, some symbols) tables. All fine and dandy.

What I don't understand are what the options are for telling people what table they're at. I know escort cards come into play here, but what are the other options? The only wedding I've been to in the last 5 years definitely did not have escort cards, but I cannot remember for the life of me how we knew what table we were at. It was not in the invitation... we certainly were not verbally told... 

Are there alternative options to the escort cards? Are the escort cards in addition to the name cards at each seat? I like the options I've seen where you write them on glass or vintage mirrors and people can just look without having to grab a physical piece of paper.

Also, what's the process with this? I imagine 150 people trying to look at the same space of wall all at once. That can't be what happens, can it?

    You could always do two seating maps and put them in different areas.  BIL was just married in June and they used one of their E pics and then had the guest names with their table number photoshopped onto the picture.

    Place cards at the table are not necessary, unless you or your venue want them.  Some venues request them so that it makes dinner service go smoothly.  They may ask you to color code the place settings to the guest's dinner so they know who ordered what.

  • I've seen it with the large frame, or writen on a cute window directing us to the right table.  You don't have to do assigned seats though.

  • We used escort cards to assign tables (not actual seats) and they worked well.  I have seen a large chalk board used before and it looked nice too.

  • I see assigned tables quite frequently, but I've never seen assigned seats. We did escort cards for each person, and they were displayed on a table during cocktail hour. 

    If you need to list an entree choice, you can indicate it on the card. Many people put a sticker or something on the back of it, or they tie a ribbon on it. Blue: fish, red: beef, pink: chicken, green: vegetarian, etc.
  • We're going to have framed seating charts.  There will be 5 different charts to split up the alphabet so that there isn't a line to see one chart.  No assigned seats, just tables.

  • Thanks guys! This explains a lot. The wedding I went to had assigned seats AND assigned tables. Still cannot remember for the life of me how we knew which table to look for our names on, though. Ha. (Mandatory "wodka" shots all night killed my memory for the evening...)

  • You can use a Seating Chart or Escort cards to show guests to their table or seat, there are so many creative options on either side! Here are a couple great Pinterest boards with options :)
