new to the board

Hello!

I've been lurking for a while so I figured it was time to post something. I'm recently engaged though it's not the most traditional arrangement! My FI and I met in Berlin, Germany. I was working in the city and he's stationed in Germany and was visiting the city for the weekend. We met at a tram stop when I heard him speaking English and everything went from there. I was working for a German company so he was pretty much the only person I got to speak English with! We dated while I was living/working in Germany but when my job ended I had to go back to the States to finish my last semester of college. We originally planned on me moving back to Germany after graduation but there were all sorts of bureaucratic/visa problems with that. We thought about getting married in Denmark (since Germany makes it nearly impossible for non EU citizens to get married) but that was going to take too much time with the bureaucratic procedures and again, my visa might run out. So, now we're having a civil ceremony in the States after Christmas, I'll move with him to Germany, and then we'll plan our religious ceremony/reception for the summertime in my hometown in the US.

Our families and friends are all very supportive and excited, and I expect we'll be having a very military influenced wedding since my father, brother, and grandfather are in the Air Force and all of his groomsmen are in the Army. I'm excited about being in Germany again (I study EU history and have spent half my college career studying in France and Germany) though I'm not looking forward to the adjustment period as I get used to a new place and have to get out there and make friends and start a new life. But it'll be great to be together again!

Nice to meet everyone! :)

Hi, welcome!  I love Germany, it's probably my favorite European country that I've been to, and I am very envious that you got and will get to live there!

Welcome!  I work with international students and many of them are from Germany.  They are always trying to get to over there to visit.  H loves it there and would go back in a second if he gets the chance!

    Thanks for the welcome everyone!

yay glad for all the Germany love! It's such a fun country and the people are so great. I've lived in Berlin and near Frankfurt but now we''ll be heading to Bavaria which will be a change...any of you familiar with that area?
  • edited December 2011
    Yeah.
I lived in Wuerzburg which is in Bavaria and about an hour and a half away from Frankfurt. I know that airport all too well! :P
Wuerzburg used to be the HQ for 1st ID but the post is closed now :( Sad. It had the best and biggest Commissary and Px in Germany.

I spent a couple weeks in Berlin while I studied abroad. I went around Christmas time and it was magical! :) I really wanted H to be stationed in Germany so I could go back, but alas there is no AF base with his aircraft.

Glad it is working out for you.

Wuerzburg is so pretty, lucky you spending 8 years there! We'll be near Regensburg, but it's pretty rural. :P

Congrats!!! Your meeting your FI seems so awesome, like fate stepped in! Good luck with your planning. My grandmother, mother, and four of my aunts are from Germany. My grandfather was in the US Army and was stationed in Germany and met my grandmother. After they got married and had kids there then they moved back to Pennsylvania. My grandmother has a strong accent but my mom and aunts lost theirs! I've always wanted to travel over with my grandmother to see her family but she hasn't been able to make the flight.

Hey! I am moving to Germany in August of 2012 with my FI, and I am so excited about it. Can you tell me a little about it or tell me what to expect? Is it a lot different? I've heard great things about it!

Germany isn't too crazy different, but they have their little cultural differences (like they won't bring the check at a restaurant til you ask for it! and they can be very blunt) and a lot of people speak English or at least enough to get by so you shouldn't run into too many problems. The main thing is get out there and see it! I met so many people on my FI's base that never left or were too scared to get out and explore. The trains are super easy to use once you get the hang of them and they offer a lot of incentives for young people to travel cheaply and visit places (look for student or under 26 discounts) so don't miss the opportuntity to see this beautiful country. And try to learn some basic German phrases-excuse me and thank you go a long way!

We were in Munich and traveled around to the outskirts via train and bus, so we saw a bit of Bavaria.  Looooooved it so darned much!  FI keeps saying he wants to go for Christmas, since he was there for Christmas while he was studying abroad but by himself so he was a bit lonely.  It's a dream of ours to spend Christmas there together one year!

I really want to see Munich! A German Christmas would be so nice, especially if you get to go to all the little Christmas markets they have. Mmmm now I'm craving mulled wine and gingerbread. I feel like Germany is the perfect backdrop for Christmas with their evergreens and snow. I grew up in the South so for me a white Christmas is a foreign thing haha
