Websites go dark tomorrow...

Wikipedia, Reddit, and Craigslist are some of the websites that are shutting down for 24 hrs starting tomorrow in protest! Holy cow, IDK how I am going to get by tomorrow without my rage comics! REDDDIIIITTTT!!!!

Anyway, bored here. Your thoughts on this protest? On SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act)?

Re: Websites go dark tomorrow...

  • I think it's great the companies are demonstrating their own protests by shutting down.  I think it's a great example of the power of the people.  Like Google choosing to leave China rather than deal with their ridiculous restrictions.

That said, I don't know enough about SOPA to have an opinion myself.  From a rough understanding, I feel like the intentions are right but the companies are on the right track that the implications would be bad.

  • Um.. My dad is super pissed because he just gave his networking students this big internet project.  It was supposed to be due thursday or soemthing, but now all of his students are like demanding an extension because "the internet will be shut down!".  <insert eye roll here>

Personally, I like that big companies are taking a stand, but I will miss them tomorrow Frown

  • Why are they protesting exactly? As long as Google and TK don't shut down, I'm good. :)

Google is definitely one of the sites that is shutting down.  I

ETA:  Apparently Google is still operational, but it will first direct you to a page about SOPA and ask you to sign a petition.

Too Funny - We weren't ever allowed to use Wiki as a reference in any papers - high school or college.

Precisely!  It's more of a quick way to find legitimate sources (or at least more legitimate...)

  • oh shoot. How about Yahoo? I need a search engine. Don't they know people are trying to plan their weddings? hah

So isn't there another way to go about dealing with illegal sharing of music and video? This is dumb. The last few protests I remember didn't really get anyone anywhere. The supermarket protest a few years back? I don't remember if anything happened with that. And the one about the illegal immigrants? They all stayed home for the day and I was so grateful the freeway was clear! I actually got to work on time that day.

Mmm hmm. I think that if you're going to protest, do it until you get results. One day isn't gonna cut it, Google/Wiki/etc.

I will say this, though... I have the strongest urge to go on Craigslist for some reason.

Ty, the supermarket protests did get some results out of it, from what I can remember.

Lol. We can just Pinterest all day. Although I'm sure tomorrow I will run across something that I will need to google!!
  • You know, I don't think Google would have been able to completely shut down anyway. Then people (such as I) wouldn't be able to access their gmail e-mail accounts. And then I'm sure they would have lots of problems!!
