curious: how many of your pics were "keepers" (PIP)

hi everybody. i posted a while back that i wasnt sure about our photographer, i found her on craigslist. she has done some weddings, and has a nice blog of engagement photos.but i just wasnt sure if we should use her. since i already put down a deposit  i decided to do an engagement session with her to help me make my decision.

we did a two hour engagement shoot at navy pier. she took 500 photos, changed lenses, got some cool angles, all that jazz. she edited them within two weeks. i just got the disc from her last night and there are only 40 keepers, i would say of the 40 about 5 are awesome. but i feel kind of mediocre on the rest.

i wanted to know out of your engagement photos, or wedding photos how many were taken, and out of those - how many did you get back that you love? my fiance thinks im being crazy, he thinks 40 keepers is totally acceptable, he keeps saying how many did you want? he thinks im being unrealistic. so i am reaching out to you knotties to try to help put it in perspective.

here are a couple of what we consider to be the awesome pics

  • Hmmm, are these the edited images that you are unhappy with? In terms of the photos that you don't like are there problems with the lighting/focus/etc or are you unhappy about something else?

Personally, I liked all the images we received in terms of the quality.  In some I didn't exactly like my smile, hair or how I looked, but that's just me :)
  • Everyone's definition of a "keeper" can vary.   If that means acceptable but not really moving, and only 5 images really moved you... then maybe you were let down.  But you're always taking a risk with craigslist photographers.  Basically... you get what you pay for, but that's true whether you find them on craigslist or anywhere else.

Only you can decide if the value of the photography is worth the savings you may be getting.

As a photographer, I can say the wide shot has some interesting lighting concepts.  The other picture that you posted has a nice rimlight on your heads, plus a really cool interaction between the two of you.  But the second shot just doesn't really jump out, it's the two of you that make that shot.

    I hope this helps.

I agree with Amy.  The majority of the shots I didn't like where due to some silly factor and not the quality or setting of the shot.

I do like the two that you posted.  Can you schedule a time to sit down with her and tell her what you like and don't like?  Maybe your styles just don't jive?
  • Maybe try to reschedule. They should give you a shoot for free if you are not satisfied with their work.
