Helium shortage? Oh my!

So my daughter thought a balloon release would be a neat thing as they leave the church to head to the reception venue. Today, I called the three places that do helium balloons in our town and, get this ... there is a nationwide helium shortage. WTH? Got the same story from all three vendors BUT the last one explained it further than the others, She told me the US never had that great of a stockpile of helium in the first place. But they recently 'disposed of' a large quantity of it even though there are many uses for it besides fun balloons, like lasers used for medical purposes, MRIs, manufacturing, flat-screen TVs, shipbuilding, the list goes on and on. Now, I agree that party balloons ought to be at the bottom of the list. HOWEVER, most of the news articles I found about it (cuz I was skeptical!) say Congress passed a law in 1996 requiring that the underground stash be 'sold off' by 2014.

Has anyone else heard this whole deal? I don't even care about the balloons at this point. No way am I spending $2 each them to literally let them blow away in the breeze. But doesn't this seem really nuts?

Re: Helium shortage? Oh my!

  • This isn't news to me; I thought this had been common knowledge for years. But even if there weren't a helium shortage, releasing balloons pollutes our environment and harms our wildlife. Please don't do it. What you're effectively doing is the equivalent of throwing trash in someone's backyard.
  • Releasing balloons are terrible for the environment. Please skip it.

  • What's supposed to be nuts? Federal policy regarding a mined natural resource (which is what helium is)? Yes, federal policy regarding helium in the last few years has been nutty, which I consider par for the federal course. Eg: gas prices
  • I thought that all the pre teens were sniffing helium these days.  Glue sniffing is so 1990s

The fact that the helium has been so mismanaged to the point where there is now a shortage for the necessary uses ... NOT party balloons ... is what I found nuts. Leave it to the government to screw up things needed for routine medical and industrial use.

I must surely live under a rock to have not known this, but cut me some slack, I live in the styx nor do I buy helium-filled balloons (or any balloons for that matter) on a regular basis.

I hadn't considered the environmental consequences but that is no good either. Believe me, we WILL NOT be doing it. I woudn't throw 'trash in someone's backyard' nor would I take 600 dollar bills and toss them into the air.

Daughter just asked about it, so I checked into it. No worries, it won't be happening.

<div>I just pictured your guests' faces if this was your daughter's send-off! ;) I hope you find an alternative that works better for all involved.</div>
  • Lmao, EK ... It would be pretty funny! Actually, if the wind were blowing in the right direction, it might work out OK as we live right across the street from the church! Can see hubs up on a ladder scooping dollar bills out of the gutters. : )

I also have visions of those 'money booth' things where you go in there and there is a wind machine and the money swirls around for you to try to grab. LOL.

  • I did know this, I work at a grocery store and we used to have free balloons blown up for children and haven't had them in months. Parents would always ask and we'd have to tell them about the shortage and that we had to reserve the helium for people purchasing balloons to be blown up.
Generally they are pretty shocked to find out about this too.

  • I have been to weddings in the past where they used to do this very very pretty but ...not good for our earth..plus most venues wont let you now
