New puppy!

My FI and I get our Beagle puppy, Penelope, next Friday! We are looking forward to raising her and providing her the best puppy life possible! My mom's dog passed away earlier this year, so she is beyond excited to become a puppy grandma...so excited, she has already given her a nickname "Penny" and called dibs on puppysitting her while we are on our honeymoon.

She is kind of a leader of the pack, which is going to SUCK for training...but they sent us videos of her playing and she is essentially full of kisses and does that adorable puppy hop thing. Totally worth it. We just have to wait this last, looooong week before she turns 8 weeks to take her home. I'm like dying of anticipation.

We are researching food, looking for a training crate, and already found her a nearby vet. Trying super hard to be responsible parents!

Look at that little face! She is adorable. I've always loved Beagles. My mum had one when she was growing up named Patches and he would sit at their table during dinner because "Patches was People". I grew up hearing about how smart he was and how amazing it was to have him in their lives. Congrats on your new family member!

She is too cute. For a food recommendation FI and I feed our pup the Wellness brand. Doesn't have any weird fillers in it. Expensive, but defintely worth the price. We've also found that we can buy it at feed and grain stores for about $10 less than what pet shops sell it for. They make a Wellness just for puppy mix and when our dog was on puppy food he loved it. We recently switched him to the adult formula and he gobbles it up in a few minutes.

Also we bought a crate on amazon for $25, much cheaper than the pet store. Our dog was estimated to max out at around 24lbs at the most, so we got a crate meant for dogs up to 25 pounds. It has held up wonderfully and it came with a divider we used when he was a baby to make the space smaller.

LOVE HER!!!! We have a beagle and his sister is named Penny. lol. Beagles are not very good listeners but I wouldn't trade my dog for anything. He is our child. We did the puppy training class at Petsmart. I definitely would not recommend that one. They do a lot of advertising/marketing. We feed Hunter California Naturals mixed with homemade dog food. It's more expensive than Iams or those types, but less expensive than the Blue Buffalo. Good luck!

Thanks for all the positive vibes ladies...I cannot freaking wait to be a puppy mom. I am super grateful for the food recommendations, since we can't keep her on the same food they currently feed her (it's from a local farm...God only knows what is in it or how safe it is for a puppy...). We have different schedules so her crate training will only be for about an hour a day most days, which I think is reasonable. Any training tips? Has anyone tried the fake grass potty spot product?

And don't worry...puppy pictures will absolutely flood this board ASAP.

For potty training, just make sure to take her out often and on a schedule. We would take our dog out after playing, after eating, and after drinking. When we would take him out we would say the cue word "go potty Ozzy" and he would get a treat immediately after doing his business. We would also not let him out of our site during potty training time. If i was in the kitchen I wout put a gate up so he had to stay there with me. Another option is to get a longggg leash and clip it you so the dog can't stray to far. The few times we forgot to keep his close he would almost certainly have an accident. We also decided that at nighttime, instead of having him wake us up to go outside, we would wake him up. We would set an alarm at 3-4 hour increments after going to sleep to wake him up to go outside. Every 4-5 days we would increase the time in between bathroom runs, so after a couple weeks we could sleep through most of the night without needing to get up. For some reason, it took until we got him neutured that he could hold it for more than 7 hours, but every dog is different, so just be patient if potty training takes longer than you anticpated.

As far as crate training, make sure the crate is a happy place and never, ever use it for punishment. We used to do time out for out dog (learned in training class) and his time out room was a bathroom, not his crate. When we started crate training we would put his meals in there, with the door open. As he went in to eat it was lots of "good boy", "in your crate good boy". We would also do mini sessions of putting treats and toys in and telling him to "go in the crate" with positve reinforcement. As a puppy he slept in there at night (but it was in our bedroom) and he would get a treat in his crate at bedtime. Some dogs will love their crate, some will hate it, and some will tolerate it. Our dog doesn't love it, but he knows when he is going in there there are treats and toys so he tolerates it.
