From my bridesmaid dress shopping experience, I got the feeling that shops are now trying to push bridesmaids towards more customization. Most of the dresses we saw were strapless and very plain and then the saleswoman would bring out belts and blingy or floral accents that you can have sewn in or on to dress it up. They also are quick to tell you that they can add straps or sell you extra fabric to have them put on. Kind of annoying because they sold the bridesmaids who were with me on a belt and add-on ruched sleeves. i really wanted to keep it simple and inexpensive for everyone.
  • Same here!  My date is Summer of 2014 so, I have plenty of time, Ive been looking online and bookmarking a lot of dresses, and passing on some that I really like because they dont have straps!  I already know who my BM's will be and my MoH, so I told them that I feel its only fair that when I look for dresses, if I cant imagine myself wearing it, Im not expecting them to.

  • So many are strapless because that is currently the style and what is considered trendy. If more people wanted sleeves, retailers would sell sleeves. Simple supply and demand.

There are plenty of BM dresses that are halter, one shoulder, cap sleeves etc. You have plenty of time to look around.

  • It seems like the majority of bridal, bridesmaid, and prom dresses are strapless and sweetheart necklines, etc.

Depending on the style and cut of the dress, it might be possible to have a seamstress alter it to add a halter, cap sleeves, etc.  There was a post on the Attire board where this was being discussed.

There are also a lot of really cute bolero's on Etsy and other sites too ;-)

  • Ha! Kristan, I love that.

Ditto PP that it's just what's "in" right now.  I didn't even consider any strapless dresses b/c a couple of my girls were on the busty side and requested straps; I had no problem with that at all.  It does cut down on your options, but on the other had it helps narrow down the choices so you're not totally overwhelmed, KWIM?  I'm sure you'll find something you like.
  • Maybe some of your girls want strapless? You should let them decide on the style of dress. Just give a few guidelines (color & length) & let them find a dress they think is best for them. Im telling you, its so much less stressful & then you dont have to worry about it.

Looking at my brides maids, they all have about the same body type except for one, and I was hoping for the formality aspect of the ceremony.  Also, my best friend, who is one of my BM's, doesnt have the best taste in modesty.  So, having them choose their own dress would be more stressful for me in the end I think.  Besides the one BM, I just hate strapless, in my brothers wedding, his wife's sister was a MoH and she had a strapless dress and she was falling out of it and it was distracting watching her pull it back up, and having 4/5 of my BM's busty, (like C-D) a strapless dress would not be comfortable for them (i know cuz I asked them).

  • Strapless is definitely "in" but there also many other styles available.  We were hesitant to do David's Bridal but ended up being very happy there and all my girls found dresses they love (2 did strapless styles, 3 did not)--and I even got talked into a dress I bought for my bachelorette party haha (not strapless either!)

  • I'm having the same issue plus some. I only have 2 bm's and they're both bigger girls and the one is extremely busty (dd people) and the only thing that seems to be out there are strapless. Now the busty one had already requested straps and thats fine because I don't want her to be uncomfortable and seriously I'd rather have pics of my best friends looking happy than worried they're about to flash my nana.
Any way so I went in to start my search the other day with my maid of honor. Did I forget to mention that my matron of honor is the busty one and lives halfway across the country? Yeah. So we go to look but I want to just narrow it down and then have my matron oh try those on before we decide and start ordering. Maid oh isn't very picky.
Well while were at the store I ended up liking a couple of strapless dresses and the girl assures me they both have spaghetti straps that can be attached.  Yeah thats reassuring for a dd. Whatever, its still my best options. But then things go horribly wrong. Overly helpful consultant girl starts talking up the credit card to my maid of honor and befor I know it she has signed up for it and bought her fave dress.
Now my matron oh is upset that shes stuck with a strapless and she doesn't even want to try dresses on until this summer so she can lose more weight.
Ok. *big sigh* thank you if you just read my little cluster f***. Any suggestions for dealing with a fashion-phobic best friend and a moh who somehow thinks this is her time to play dress up would be greatly appreciated.
  • 4/5 of my bridal party are busty girls, so to me, strapless and spaghetti straps are the same thing to me, Ive just seen too many dresses at weddings almost fall or be hiked up inbetween pictures and the like.  Ive asked my girls and they dont want strapless or spaghetti straps.  I think I mentioned it before, but its just not classy, and for a June wedding, no one wants to worry about a dress not looking right and the heat.  I want my BM's and MoH to have fun AND look fabulous!
