How early is too early?

My FI and I are getting married in November.  I was at a bridal show this past weekend and the Boscovs that sponsered it is doing a drawing for couples that register by the end of March.  8 Months before the wedding seems a little early to me, however they aren't giving he winners some pretty sweet stuff (12 Lenox place settings, Mikasa stemware, pots and pans and a few other really nice things).  Would it be alright to register that early for a chance at all that really cool stuff?

Re: How early is too early?

  • I wouldn't make the full registry that early, as you'd end up running into things getting discontinued, etc.  But I see no reason to start the registry and get your basics on there.
  • Yep, I'd go ahead and start the registry now, whatever you need to do to get entered in the contest.  Then go back later and make whatever changes/additions/subtractions you need.

  • I was asked about my registry as soon as I got engaged. In my mind, the only registry created too early is the one created before you're actually engaged. Just be careful about discontinuations, etc.

</div><div>I agree with this.  If you like shopping online (like me) then it's not a big deal when something gets discontinued.  Most of the time the stores update that merchandise with something similar and it takes less than 5 min to replace that item.  It can be a problem for china, crystal, flatware, etc but only if you're really unlucky or don't do your research.  Many patterns have been around for years, some decades.</div>

  • My wedding is 8 months away and I have already received gifts from my registry despite the fact I have yet to have an engagement party or bridal shower. Sometimes people just want to buy you stuff, and it can't hurt to point them in the right direction! Just make sure you don't neglect your registries as things could potentially become unavailable if you are registered for a long period of time before showers and the wedding.
