In need of a wedding venue!

Hey everyone! I'm knew here on the knot and in desperate need of your help.
I'm planning my wedding for Ocotber of this year and I still havent found a venue yet.
I'm looking for an estate type look that fits 230 prefferably with a garden for the ceremony.
My budget is $12,000. very slim for this area but it can work!

You want 230 people for $12K? I have no idea but I bet others may chime in and help you.
Even if a venue is $100 incl tax and tip for that amount of people it is almost double your budget.
I found a thread on brides.com very helpful for my initial start of the venue search:

  • That's a really tall order for high season in NJ.

I Google'd and came up with this.  It might be a place to start.

Be prepared to be flexible with your date.  As a rule, prices are lower for Friday, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday weddigs.  Also venues may be willing to negotiate with you since it's inside of a year.

  • Think about non-traditional venues.  A friend of mine got married at Mulder Chapel (sp) in Warwick, NY.  They had to provide their own officiant and the reception was down in the basement which they catered themselves.  That space looked better than a hall, but obviously not as elegant as something like The Palace.  But candidly, ~$50/head doesn't buy much elegance.  So think differently.
  • Please tell us the $12k is only for the reception because if it's not, I'm not sure you can have what you want.  If that is the budget you are still talking about a wedding for $52 pp for 230 people.

Check out Rutherford Hall in Allamuchy http://rutherfurdhall.org/ It's realtively new to the wedding venue business & might work but I don't know it's capacity.  I doubt it can hold 230 inside, at least not in the ballroom I was in.
  • My suggestion would be to find a caterer that will bring in food to a location that you rent. The type and quantity of food will be lighter in fare - think brunch or dessert reception.

Alcohol will probably not be included in a $52 pp price - but maybe could just be beer and wine, possibly only champagne?

Look into renting the Glen Ridge Women's Club or a park - those are the types of locations that come to mind, but there are other suggestions as well. A VFW hall would probably suffice is large enough, or another establishment that doesn't generally hold weddings. Contact your alma mater to see if they have historic buildings on campus or even a friend with a large home?

Another suggestion to cut down the budget is to invite less people - 230 is a very large wedding and it just might not be possible to do it for $12,000.

  • Maybe a Sunday brunch?  Bridgewater Manor/Perona Farms.  It still may be a bit tough with that guest list.
The suggestions above are good too (Women's Club or VFW)
    Good luck!
  • I'm not sure you will find exactly what you are looking for with that budget.  Especially for October.  I'm having an October wedding and my venue is $140pp and we have 150 ppl.
Have you looked into The Tides?  They have a garden and I think they are a little more afforable.  Maybe you can consider cutting down your guest list.

    Good luck!

  • Good luck. Your expectations are extremely high....Is the 12K for just the reception venue or for the entire wedding?

  • Try Women's Clubs, like Ridgewood, Glen Ridge. I think Englewood and Montclair are too small
Newark Museum, Montclair Museum and find a caterer that will make your budget work.
Maybe the Oakside Mansion in Bloomfield with Frungillo Catering, they also have a restored pub which is called the Inn at Millrace Pond. Worth a shot but I am not sure on the pricing.

I was trying to do an unconvential wedding venue such as the places above and they are all really great but we are finding it very hard to find a caterer for a price lower than what reception halls are charging for that time of year and I feel like with less perks and food so its been frustrating. We might go the reception hall route because our budget is 15k for February. And it might just be easier having one vendor!

    I hope it works out
