Courthouse wedding???

So my fiancee and I are really short on cash so I was thinking that instead of just eloping we could get married at a court house and then  have a really big reception afterwards...had anyone done this and if so how did you manage any hurt feelings or traditional family members. Thank you ladies

From what I have learned on this journey is that the bulk of the money is for the reception. Food and drinks cost the most. So if you are short on money then having a big reception may not be the way to go. You aren't going to save much by having a courthouse wedding.

In the times I've been invited only to a reception it hasnt bothered me but I cant speak for others.

its true the reception is where all the costs is going to hit you.  food alone is a huge cost...the cake another big cost...We're planning a wedding for around 3000 and if it wasnt for the fact I have awesome friends who has talents in certain things there's no way i'd be able to pull off what I'm going to do.  I wish every girl getting married can have awesome friends that specialize in almost everything you need for a wedding

I agree with the other girls. The main cost of a wedding is in the reception. If you are short on cash why don't you have your ceremony and then do a cake and punch reception? Or, rent out a hall and cater it from a restaurant?

Hey ladies thank you for the advice. My FI and I have decided that we are going to have our ceremony and reception at one place and cater ourselves. My family is huge so we are always doing buffet style events for everything including christmas so I figure why not for my wedding they know I'm broke so they aren't going to mind plus it will be way less expensive then paying for someone to cater for us.

In this day and age everyone is cutting corners and actually i'm sure if you talk to certain memebers of your family they may even consider helping with a pot luck buffet style.  you can go online to like the dollar tree and buy the stuff for the buffet for mega cheap.  there are alot of ways to keep costs low.  I have a year to go as of today for my wedding and I am constantly hunting and looking and picking things up here and there and when we tell family and friends whats going on they start to say hey I can do this to help most will do it in exchange for a gift.  like for me my neighbor is designing and doing my invites, a friend is making our cupcake/cake top layer cake then a ton of cupcakes, another friend is doing the food, another the dress's for the girls I've been extremely lucky. but now I'm looking for a venue again because where I was going to do it is so up in the air and i wont find out till april that I have it and I hate not knowing what is going on.
