Help with Bar Dilemma

We are having an open bar.

Our reception starts with a cocktail hour on the second floor of our space, and is followed by dinner/dancing on the first floor.

here is the question: should we move teh bar down to the first floor, and lose and hour around the time of the dinner for the move, or leave it open the whole time, but hten people have to go up and down the escalator to get drinks.  Thoughts?

Is there a way you could let people know to grab a drink right before dinner, so they have a dinner drink while the bar moves? If you leave the bar upstairs, people will probably drink less. If you're serving drinks until a set amount is reached, this could be good, as the alcohol would last longer. If you're hosting an open bar all evening, you may end up paying a lot more for the amount people actually drink.

I would suggest having the bar moved... BUT I would wait until you start dinner and have someone make an announcement that in 5 minutes (or so) the bar will be closed during dinner so that it can be moved to the "dinning area"

I think that's what I'll do.  Especially since it means I have to pay for one less hour of open bar (its priced per hour, not by how much each person drinks)

totally agree with everyone else here. if you leave the bar upstairs your guests might stay up there and not dance.
