July 2012 Weddings

*mekiakoo* (and anyone with safari experience)

Hi!

I know you're busy with house-related stuff, but I wanted to ask you a rather silly question. What did you wear when you went on safari with your family? I'm trying to figure out what I need to purchase between now and July so that I can be sure I get what I need to have with me. For the record, it'll be their winter there so it won't be hot, but we'll be in Kruger so it's on the East side (not stormy).

Thank you! Hope you're doing well!

  • HAHAHA. I'm such a computer idiot that I didn't even know that could be misconstrued. :)

    Any ideas of safari attire?

In other news, is this the most ridiculous question ever asked on our board?

  • One of FI's GM is from South Africa and he took his wife on a safari for their honeymoon... she wore mostly shorts, t-shirts, comfortable shoes, tank tops, but brought sweatshirts and windbreakers to layer in case it got cold later in the day.  This was for their outdoorsy adventures (I saw the pictures!).

I honestly don't remember what time of the year they went, though.

  • I am sorry I have never been on one before so I have no idea.  I just think of Indiana Jones gear for some reason lol.  When I hear the word safari I think khaki shorts and white shirts with boots and a hat lol.

  • Hi!! I'm here today!! :)

They suggested us to wear nature colors. Bright colors attract bugs. So I wore mostly khanki pants/jackets- they're light and cool. I wore mostly tan, olive green colors. Bring layers of clothes too, you'll remove them during the day- be sure to wear light weighted ones. You probably want a wind breaker too. I wore a sweatshirt in the mornings.

My khanki pants had a zipper where I was able to remove 1/2 of it to have it into shorts. It is WORTH it- I know I looked like a dork, but it is really cold in the mornings- we usually went out before the sun came up and it was as cold as 40 degrees. Then during the day it was about 100 degrees, but it was very dry so it wasn't too bad. No humidity (we went in July/August). And we were in east Africa (Kenya & Tanazia).

They also suggest to cover yourself- you don't want bugs bitting you so wear long sleeved shirts and pants and sneakers. Most importantly- wear nature colored clothes.

Bring a camera & bincoulars!! The animals you'll see are amazing!

    Hope this helps!!

  • The "high" temperature average is in the mid-70s and the "low" temperature average is mid-40s, so I'm assuming I'll need some sort of windbreaker, sweatshirt, probably long pants. Boots? This is going to be hard to pack for since the first half of the honeymoon is beachy and the little safari planes limit you to 40lbs of luggage. (That's a challenge for me, because I pack probably 40 lbs for a weekend trip. I'm an overpacker.)

LADY, I totally agree about the Indiana Jones - I have this vision of me in head-to-toe brown and beige and green. I'm just wondering if that's an actual requirement or if it's just because people think that's how they're supposed to dress!

In any event, I'm going to go google "Fashionable Safari Gear" right now. lolz

  • I responded before mekia. Thank you for the ideas!!!

Where did you purchase the clothing? I'm so unfamiliar with camping/hiking gear.

I'd not pack boots. They're too heavy. Sneakers worked just fine for me and I was so glad to have something light to walk around in! Unless you are thinking of hiking boots? They're not so bad.

I bought most of my clothes from REI, Diick's (with one "i", I can't believe this site won't let me use this word!) Sporting Goods. REI has a lot of good clothes- try looking at camping stores, they have a ton of clothes that would be good for your trip.

  • Thanks! I'll check out REI. I think I have one pair of pants pinned from there already (I think they are what you're referring to with the removable bottom part).

So much for sexy honeymoon outfits :( hahahaha

  • I totally picture Indiana Jones as well. You could totally do some Indiana Jones role playing, that could be sexy ;)
