engagement pictures

hi everybody! first time on this bulletin forum and i wanted to introduce myself. my name is kristen and i will be marrying my best friend on thanksgiving weekend. we are going to be doing our engagement pictures this week with our photographer heather parker during the afternoon. i'm torn between wearing jeans and going around to places like the boston commons and faneul hall. plus i am not sure if we need to apply to get permits for that kind of thing. our other option is to do something a little bit more personal and shoot at the restaurant we got engaged at. its a nice restaurant so i wouldn't really want to wear jeans but it seems like everyone does the engagement photos in jeans.

can you ladies tell me what you wore for your engagement pictures? also do you get to go to one place or several places in one shoot?

I went all around boston: Back Bay Station, Boston Public Library (inside and the surrounding area), Fanieul Hall, and the waterfront down by the Aquarium. The pictures were amazing, especially from the library. It was a lot of fun and we got some amazing pictures!

I do like your other idea of getting the photos where you got engaged. I wanted to do this (we got engaged by the fountains near the Christian Science Center), but the fountains weren't on yet for the season. In the end, I'm really happy that we went all around Boston. I think we'll get some pics over by the engagement site later (possibly after the wedding).

I guess what I'm trying to say is you probably will have a great time and end up with amazing pictures no matter what you do and you can always book a second session if you regret your choice.

    Good luck!

Heather Parker is amazing!  You are sure to get beautiful photos! Sometimes people bring changes of clothes, talk to her and see what she suggests. Have fun!

I think if you want to follow the flock, wear jeans.

We did our pictures in our neighborhood in Charlestown and then made our way over to the North End where we got engaged.  It was late September and chilly but I still wore a sleeveless cute cocktail dress with heels and FI wore jeans and a tucked in button down dress shirt w/ nice shoes.

Personally, I really wanted to wear a fun outfit that I wouldn't necessarily wear every day.  My FI and I already have tons of pictures in our jeans/ every day wear.  I wanted to take full advantage of our engagement session being a special occasion and dress up for it!  When else can you frolic around this amazing city with a professional photographer focusing all of her attention on you?!  Oh and I also got my makeup professionally done for the pictures. I used it as a "trial" with one of the potential artists I wanted to work for and it was a great experience and I noticed a huge difference in the pictures. We had a really fun experience and I hope you do too!!

Huh, I never noticed that most people wear jeans.  And it never occurred to me to do so just bc other people do it.  Wear what you want to wear silly!

I bought a new dress at Nordstrom Rack that I just loved.  It was a pink silk dress that just happened to be really flattering on me.  We did our pics in the public gardens.  Technically you are supposed to get a permit for any of the public parks, but we didn't.  There are so many people with SLRs taking pics, no one stopped us.  Obviously if you are in a wedding dress, that's different, but for e-pics we didn't bother.  I think you are fine in Fanuel Hall area too since it isn't a park, I don't think you would need a permit anyway.

If i were you, I would think about what type of clothes you feel most beautiful in and where you plan to use the photos.  We had a few large prints made and will hang them in our house and used them for STDs.  I always feel prettiest in a dress, so that's what I watned to wear.

ETA: Also, sometimes it helps to look at other people's E-pics, see what they are waering and how it looks to get some ideas.  Here's my photogs blog of e-pics, they might give you some inspiration for clothes and venue.  I think the restaurant sounds fun, but maybe limited in terms of photo options.  I'd suggest you stop there as part of your e-pics if you have enough time.

We're doing ours outside around Boston and where we got engaged, and I'm wearing a dress and FI is wearing a sports jacket. I agree with PP, wear what you are comfortable in. If you do take photos in front of or in public buildings, beware that you might need permission first. (I'm sure the commons or fenway is fine) One of my college classes required photos of some public buildings and some students almost got arrested for taking pictures in front of a goverment building.

We did ours inside Fenway Park so we wore RedSox jerseys--but if we did them by the Public Gardens (second choice) I was going to wear a new dress and DH would wear khakis and a nice shirt--like PP's have said we have lots of photos of us dressed casually, we would have dressed up a bit.

Me and FI wear jeans when we want to bum around so we wanted our engagement shoot to be a little bit more special than that. During our shoot, our photographer got questioned by a private security guard while taking pix in front of a building but she carries her Photographers Bill of Rights card that informs ignorant MBTA workers, private security guards and other nuisances that you can photograph a private building from the outside as long as you are on public property. The exception is nuke plants and military bases. Just an FYI. We learned all about it during our shoot.

We did our photos at the beach and in the city. At the beach I wore nice capris and a navy shirt, and in the city I wore a dress with dressy sandals. DH wore khaki shorts and a short sleeved button down for the beach and jeans and a long sleeved button down for the city.

My best advice I can give you is don't do something just because everyone else is doing it. Choose a location that's special to you and your FI, it'll make you more comfortable and feel more connected during your e-sesh. Also, think of the overall "look" you want for your photos. Do you want swanky and cool, fun and laid back? Those will help you determine what to wear :)

    Have fun!
