  We looked into that quite a bit, but ran into the same trouble...  or places that had right on the ads/descriptions for them that they didn't allow weddings/parties.
  
  We had pretty much given up on it by the time we found our venue anyway.  I hope you have better luck!

  We seriousy considered this, but ultimately opted for a "destination wedding" in Sedona.
  
  These are just ones that I saved the links to as possible
  ones to look into more.  I never e-mailed any of them, so I don't really know if
  they would work out, and the prices are all over the place.

  An issue of concern for having your wedding at a private residence, etc,
  - where are your guests going to park? 
  - how are you going to pay for damages that your guests do to the home?
  - is there a noise ordinance in the neighborhood after a certain hour? (respectful of other people that live in the neighborhood that have kids, etc)

  A great place to start is the private estate directory www.estateweddingsandevents.com.  Unlike a vacation rental listing, these houses are available for weddings and events, and they all have a manager to help you through the process.
