Is Santa Monica pretty?

I'm wanting to stay on the coast & Santa Monica seems pretty from pictures online - I was just wondering has anyone been/lived in SM?
My choices are: Malibu, SM, Manhattan Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport & Laguna!

My FI & I are taking a 7 day trip to California. We plan on visiting all of these places by taking day trips there, we just are not totally sure where we should stay.

    I really liked Malibu when I went to California.  We also visited the Santa Monica area.  Since we were so close to Venice beach we decided to go there as well.  That was VERY scary.  We also drove down to Long beach which was about an hour or more away with traffic. I think if you wanted to go to Laguna that is pretty far down there.  Maybe you would be better off going to San Diego.

    Montana is the nicest. I live in SanMo and its weird to call it pretty. There are a lot of homeless people and its fairly big city. The closer you get to venice the nastier it gets. I'd say if you are kinda a free spirit hippy person you might like it. Montana is more chic. My fiance is defending it right now! Big crowds in the summer, stick with spring. There is also the big blue bus that is fairly nice remember still a city and can take you anywhere. I'd say a cottage in a small vermont town in spring is pretty. Santa monica montana is hollywood chic, other beach parts for free spirits and adventurous types. Venice if you are daring!
