Rehearsal Dinner... I have no idea!

FI's parents are taking care of the rehearsal dinner, which I am SOOOO grateful for!
They said that they plan on inviting 100 people... which is freaking me out! why do 100 people have to be invited to the rehearsal dinner???
Who is customarily invited to the rehearsal dinner?
who did you invite?

Also, the location.  I'm at a loss.
I want a place like Love and War in Texas, or Texas Roadhouse, or even Black Eyed Pea.  Southern cooking, chickenfried everything, and country gravy! yum!  I figured these places aren't normal rehearsal dinner type places, but I was wondering if anyone out there had their event or rehearsal dinner in a place like this, and how did it go?

Does anyone have any suggestions on a restaurant like this, for 100 people and in Dallas?  Since our rehearsal will be at Fair Park, I would like the place to be in Dallas.

Thanks for your advice and help!

usually wedding party and OOT guests are invited to the RD. personally, if we invited all our OOT guests, then we'd have a list as big as yours!

one of the places i originally thought of having our RD at was babe's chicken. have you ever been there? it's delicious!!! and very homey. http://www.babeschicken.com/
they get very busy on weekends, i believe, but i'd call and ask what they can do for you.

    HTH!

Yep, thats who FMIL said she was inviting, all of the OOT guests... Maybe a few wont come in till Saturday, so the list will shorten up a bit.

I LOVE Bubbas! (which is Babe's brother, lol)  They cant do a big party in house, which is a shame, because it would be delish!

Wow that is a ton of people and I would think finding somewhere to accomodate that will be tough.  My only word of caution on the southern home cooking is that the meals can be very heavy and not sit as well as a light meal.  We were going to do Babes (we only have 12 ppl) but ate there a few weeks ago and felt like I had a brick in my stomach afterwards and didnt want to feel like that the night before.  Maybe choose somewhere that does have a couple light options for guests.  Just my personal experience but not sure if you thought about that.

What about the Sonny Bryan's West End location? Not exactly southern cooking, but close. I have been to a couple dinner events there and it was good and went over well with everyone.

I'm not so good with the advice... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

Have you looked at the Hard 8?  It's more Southern BBQ but so good, can accomodate large groups, etc.

Traditionally, anyone who attends the rehearsal is invited to the RD, along with their SO's.  Inviting OOT guests is optional.

We invited our OOTs but we only ended up with around 30-35.  Having 100 would be very overwhelming because you're still not going to have time to spend with everyone, which sort of defeats the purpose, IMO.

My FILs are also hosting a huge RD. I agree with what Stephiehall said about who is customarily invited to the RD. But in my case, my FILs love to throw a party, so they're essentially throwing a pre-reception the night before the wedding! (They're inviting the entire wedding guest list, and they rented a hall in FW and are having a Mexican restaurant cater it, so unfortunately that doesn't help you find a venue in Dallas).

Thankfully, they made these plans on their own and just asked me for confirmation that I liked it (which of course I do!). Hopefully your FILs also doing some research to find a venue.

When I was still planning the reception, I contacted a couple of restaurants in FW to see if I could rent out their entire restaurant for the evening. The two I contacted said yes, and had no charge for the venue and a special fixed menu for the guests. So you might just call the restaurants near your reception venue/blocked hotels and see which ones could accommodate your group and how (party room, rent out the whole place, etc).

    Thanks for the suggestions!
We went to Dixie House this evening to see how that place would work out.  We weren't too impressed with the place.  It was yummy food. but FMIL didn't really like the place.

She mentioned Ozona, I just googled it.  I think that place would work out well!

I'm trying to stay away from BBQ. We did that for the e-party. And we are having Mexican at the wedding, so we want to try to stay away from that as well.

I would do Texas Roadhouse or Black Eyed Pea or something where people have somewhat healthy options.   (i.e. grilled meats and non-fried vegetables) Deep fried foods smothered in gravy are not everyone's cup of tea.

Cotton Patch may be another option for you.

For a RD that large, you could check out some different smaller wedding venues and have it catered by Black Eyed Pea or similar, maybe.

Can I just say - 100 guests is a wedding, not a RD.  I would cut the list back majorly!
  • edited December 2011
I would also suggest cutting. I did the math last week and will likely  have 35 at the most. I thought that was a lot. Then again, how large is your bridal party? I have 3 BMs, he has 3 GMs.
Disclaimer: Please excuse the above comment. I'm probably freaking out because there is less than one month to go. Thank you.
