Publication of Banns?

Can anyone shed light on what is actually involved? Has anyone seen it done at a wedding? In my province, we have the option of going this route over getting a marriage license (which saves us about $130). TIA

Re: Publication of Banns?

  • This sounds like it is a legal thing where you are...I've never heard of it as you are talking about it as a replacement for a license.

In the church, the traditional purpose of publishing banns is for people to speak up in case they are aware of previous marriages. It's done still out of tradition. It doesn't cost anything, and only some parishes do it.
  • Try a Canadian board.

Anglicans still commonly publish banns. For Anglicans, you just ask the Priest at your home parish and the parish where the wedding will take place to publish the banns. Ours gave us a choice of the 3 Sundays before the wedding, or the first Sunday of the months before the wedding.

I imagine there will be clear rules about timing for you because the banns meet a civil requirement in addition to a possible canonical requirement.
