Mini apple pies for favors?

Hi ladies!!!

I found an original idea for favors to make apple pies in mason jars. We are getting married on November 19 and I thought the would be cute for our fall theme. We are having about 120 guests and would probably make one per couple. So that would mean making about 80. They can be made ahead of time and frozen until a few days before.

Am I completely crazy? My fiancé definitely thinks I am!

Thanks!

I did do a test run of these and it took about 15 minutes to make 4 of them and they were delicious. I love to bake! : )

Well... In theory i think it is an ADORABLE idea.... But...... My paranoid practical side takes over and starts reving itself up worrying about lawsuits and stuff when one explodes from heat! I KNOW the receipesays they are canning jars and won't explode but does that jar say ovenproof or something? My over imaginative mind is already seeing someone leaning over a hot oven pulling these out and then POW right in their face!!!!!! I am a FIRM believer of NEVER putting any glass in an oven unless it is stamped ovenproof or safe up to XXX degrees. There is ACTUALLY a reason some glass is stamped and some isn't! So basically I vote YES if it is done in OVENproof glass and NO if it is regular canning jars that aren't marked safe for the oven.

I actually LOVE this idea. I am also having a November wedding and in search of favor ideas similar to this. Try it out and see if you like out it comes out, if so then start baking!!

This would be pretty neat.  Thanks for the idea.  I'm going to look into it!  I would recommend some test runs as well.

What did you decide?  I too am getting married on 11/19 and my color is Apple Red from David's Bridal.  This is a great idea.  I had also found a red candle that is 2 inches tall and in a nice container that I considered as well.  Just not sure what to do.

I am getting married in October, and instead of doing the apple pies in mason jars, I am making mini pumpkin pies in mini aluminum tart pans. (you can search on google for them if you dont know what they look like)

You could do the same with Apple Pies in the tart pans. Aluminum is oven safe.
The only thing for your November wedding is its probably more formal than my "fall outdoor" theme wedding.

So, you could take organza or something like that and make a "bag" for the mini apple pies and tie the top with ribbon in the color of the wedding party, and attach a "thank you from So-&-So" card in the ribbon.

    Hope this helps!!

I know exactly what you mean by the "Am I crazy" question. I posed it a few months ago about my mini cherry pies (my colours are red and cherry pie filling from a can is completely acceptable tasting to me)  - pastry being HOMEMADE by me was a must since I'm picky about pies!

I've downgraded in size to cherry tarts to cut down on the bake times and assembly.

Tips: Fruit pies can be assembled in advance and frozen until ready to bake! Or if you're short on freezer space like me:  Pastry can be made in advance and frozen until day of use.

For 140 tarts its going to take me an entire afternoon to create, bake & box (about 4-5 hours).

Do some test runs so you know what to expect the day of assembly! Go from creating to baking to any cooling time and assembly and do the math.

I totally love the heartfelt homemade ideas and think its worth the time and effort.
If you have the time - DO IT!  Way nicer to get something edible and homemade than more 'junk' for the shelves at home!

we decided we are definitely going to make them!

I found the jars from ace hardware with free shipping!

We tested them out with baking from frozen and it worked great! I just put the frozen jars (without lids) in the oven and then turned it on so they had time to heat up a little. My bridesmaids and I will be making a weekend out of it come september.... apple picking and baking!

Thanks for all of your replies!

My mother's friend's daughter did the mini apple pies as a favor at her wedding. They were a decent amount of work (my mom helped) but a HUGE hit. She said she didn't see any remaining at the end of the night.
