Poughkeepsie/Hyde Park Photographers

Hi Ladies,

I'm new to the boards and though I'd throw out some basic photography questions. I apologize if this topic has already been covered ad nauseum.

What can I expect to spend for a full day of coverage (5-8 hours)? I've looked at sites that list from 3,500 and up, sometimes just for the labor and not for any prints or albums. What are some ways to trim costs?

Are you starting with the photographer in your home or getting dressed somewhere else or simply meeting the photographer at your ceremony site?

Are you doing wedding party (groomsmen and bridesmaids) before the actual ceremony or immediately afterward?

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice you may have.

-K

Welcome to the Hudson Valley board! Hopefully you are getting married in the area, because it seems that photography, like with venues, vary greatly from state to state (and area to area within the same state). Anyway, that said, I'll try to help.

[QUOTE]Hi Ladies, I'm new to the boards and though I'd throw out some basic photography questions. I apologize if this topic has already been covered ad nauseum.

What can I expect to spend for a full day of coverage (5-8 hours)? I've looked at sites that list from 3,500 and up, sometimes just for the labor and not for any prints or albums. This will vary greatly among photograhers. But for this area $3500 is a good starting point. If that's your budget, you can find quite a few with packages at around that point.

What are some ways to trim costs? Purchase your album separately. Either create it on your own, or purchase from your photgrapher after your wedding. See if he (or she) can work by themself without an assistant. Ask if you can design your own package.

Are you starting with the photographer in your home or getting dressed somewhere else or simply meeting the photographer at your ceremony site? Photog came to my house. Most will want some time with you before the actual ceremony.

Are you doing wedding party (groomsmen and bridesmaids) before the actual ceremony or immediately afterward? We did Bride and parents, bride and siblings, Brides family all before the wedding. Bridal party pics were done done after. (But thats' because SIL didn't come to my house. For my sisters wedding, all her BM's came to the house, so she did those pics before the wedding as well)

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice you may have. -K

    Dear Terri,

Thank you so much for your helpful response. Yes, I'm getting married in Poughkeepsie and am trying to book a local person. It's good to know that the prices I am seeing are not that out of line. I will try to negotiate with photographers to create my own package. I also like the idea of purchasing the parent albums at a later date, perhaps as a holiday gift instead of paying for it at the time of the wedding.

    Thanks again!

Digital-weddings in Fishkill offers different packages in that price range.

Terri's answers are all good ones! Our photographer, Kim Coccagnia, lives in Beacon, and she was wonderful. Her packages start lower than $3500. She was with me all day. I think she came to the hair salon around 10:30 AM, and didn't leave until the reception was over at midnight. We love our pictures, and saved money by creating our own album.

No problem! We used Majestic Studios for both photo and video and they have packages in your price range. (They and Digital Weddings are in Dutchess county and do both)

Also, remember that most photographers require you to pay around 2/3 (give or take) of the balance by the day of. The rest of your balance is usually paid when you get your proofs or albums. (Which, because it's after your wedding, you have the option of using gift money) So that might help a bit as well.

Good luck! Where is your wedding taking place?

Thanks everyone! We are doing it at the Vassar Chapel and then a reception at the VC Alumnae House. Just 100 guests and a fairly informal wedding but I know that having a good photographer in our price range is essential. I'm hoping we'll get some good shots on campus and around the Alumnae House.

I was just speaking to one photographer who only asks the $300 as a deposit and the remaining balance the day of the wedding and when I see the proofs. That seems really fair. Another photographer I met with wanted 1/2 of a $3500 package immediately, as in this month and in cash, and then the remaining 1/2 3 weeks before the wedding. That's a lot up front for a wedding that's not until June.

Thanks again. I'll definitely check this board regularly for good ideas.

Some photographers will include 2 photographers at no extra charge, and most will work with your budget. I would also check out the work of folks priced lower than your stated budget, there are some great deals out there. hudsonvalleyweddings.com has an extensive listing of local photographers. Definitely have someone there for the getting ready part. And deposits or retainers will vary greatly, as will the payment plans. Try to get all-day coverage too. Worth it.

Welcome to the Hudson Valley Board...

I will be getting married this coming July in Newburgh & will be using Steven Planck from Blue Sky Photography in Wappingers Falls. A friend of mine used him for her wedding & I instantly fell in love with his work. I actually picked my wedding date based on days he was still available. Steve understood that I wanted pictures that told the story of my day, not just typical wedding shots. He is very unobtrusive & has a modern photojournalistic style to his work. His packages start at $3500 & go up from there. We chose to go with his middle package. A quarter of the total price was due the day we signed our contract.

The website for his work is:

Good luck with all your planning!!! Just remember, you will have your pictures forever, so make sure you find someone who meets your photography wants & needs!!!

We're using Melissa Surprise (yes that's her name). Check out her blog on her website so you can check out all of her work and look at the different venues she's photographed-
www.surprisephotography.com. She's located right in Poughkeepsie and her packages start at $3000 I believe for 10 hours which includes her assistant, she just raised her prices so I might be a little off on the price but I'm almost positive it starts at $3000 and it's a $500 deposit. So far it's been a great experience. Good Luck I know it's a tough decision!
